4.0 out of 5 stars It's About time Mercer Was Recognized!!, November 23, 2007
This review is from: Jack Mercer, the Voice of Popeye (Paperback)
Fred Grandinetti has done animation history a real service in writing this book recognozing Jack Mercer, long time voice of Popeye and other characters. Jack tends to get overlooked and partly this is because he was a very humble guy. But so many of us grew up watching cartoons he voiced and/or wrote the scripts for, and appreciate his work. One of the main strengths of this book is that Fred knows what it was like being a Baby Boomer growing up with made-for-TV cartoons, so he treats both theatrical films made-for-TV cartoons with respect. In reading this book, I ran across characters that I thought I had forgotten, but instantly recognized when I saw the pictures Fred has included and read the characters' descriptions. I was taken back to the days of watching "Milton The Monster," "The Mighty Hercules," "Felix The Cat" and more!! Thanks, Fred!!

In the interest of full disclosure, I should say that I contributed an essay to this book and that Fred is an INTERNET friend of mine and I respect his efforts to make sure the old Popeye cartoons are not forgotten. Having said that, I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the history of animation or who grew up as I did happily mesmerized in front of the TV set as cartoons were shown. Fred is one of us!! Buy his book!
