Super Golf Tournament Book,
By Clay Ballentine (Austin, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jack Nicklaus' Playing lessons (Hardcover)
I don't need another book on the golf swing. I wanted another copy of this book for the "Thoughts" it has. This is clearly the best "non-swing" golf book ever written and the illustrations are terrific. If you have ever played or are considering playing in golf tournaments, you need this book. This was a used copy, from Alibris, and it is in better condition than many new books I've bought, I would highly recommend Alibris and Amazon for any used book.

Can Help Anyone From Beginner to Major Champions,
This review is from: JACK NICKLAUS' PLAYING LESSONS (Board book)
This is one of those non-technical books that needs to be deeply absorbed. The first six chapters alone make it worthwhile. He fills it with insights that can help improve both your ability to play AND your understanding and enjoyment of the game. He makes a lot of candid statements about himself and also about the game he clearly loves. In fact, the more I read the book, the more I appreciate golf on its many different levels. Truly a wonderful educational and inspirational book. Here is a short excerpt from the greatest golfer of all time:"Day in, day out, I'm a better strategist and tactician than I am a shot maker. As a result it's often been said that I have had the ability to win when playing poorly. That is actually not quite the truth. The truth is that I have won many times when I have been striking the ball comparatively poorly, but I have never won - not even when striking at my best - when I have been managing myself or my game poorly. It's these mental factors, I believe, that finally determine a person's level of success at golf, whether you measure it by winning major championships or breaking 90." And with regards to "Major Championships", I think Jack will remain perched at the top for a long, long time.

Excellent drawings,

This review is from: Jack Nicklaus' Playing Lessons (Paperback)
Very cool color pencil drawings, and lots of great tips. Reminds me of a comic book. Some of the tips start to get a bit redundant later on, as I think this was originally intended to be released gradually in a magazine. Worth it just for the drawings alone.

THE ABSOLUTE BEST by THE ABSOLUTE BEST,

This review is from: Jack Nicklaus' Playing lessons (Hardcover)
I have been playing competitive tournament golf for more than half my life. I have read literally hundreds of golf books from cover to cover. I have owned this book almost as long as Hogan's Power Golf, and do agree that Playing Lessons is the the finest non-swing golf book around. The fact is, that it took me from scoring in the 80s down to the 60s in my teens. Simple imagery presented instruction which will simplify and revolutionize one's approach to nearly every shot scenario, condition, and mental aspect of the game that one might encounter. It equally and successfully presents situational concepts as well as larger self awareness/overall development concepts in a way that makes sense for anyone between ages 10 and 110. And realisitically, you have to ask yourself, "who would know more about golf strategy and player development than "The Bear" himself?" This is simply THE ABSOLUTE BEST golf book for young players to have on their shelf if they want to be serious about becoming a solid player. It was written by THE ABSOLUTE BEST player ever.
