Jack Pierce: the Man Behind the Monsters,
This review is from: Jack Pierce: The Man Behind The Monsters (Paperback)
Jack Pierce and his work are worthy of extensive review; this thin book isn't it. Pierce, as the creative genius heading the Universal studios make-up department during the era of Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolf Man and the Mummy, deserves the kind of exhaustive, scholarly examination currently enjoyed by Ray Harryhausen.
At $20, "Man Behind the Monsters" is little more than a 48-page collection of previously-published photos. I suppose it will have to do until a more serious effort is produced. In short, something is better than nothing.

i bought this book for my sister and it wasn't quite what i was expecting. it's not much more than a (badly) photocopied book; the pictures are kind of ruined by the obvious lines from the photocopier running through them, and cover was badly cut and rough. considering there aren't many other options out there to purchase, i suppose it's okay, but ultimately kind of disappointed with this purchase.

This review is from: Jack Pierce: The Man Behind The Monsters (Paperback)
The excitement of finding a book on the genius responsible for the most iconic makeup jobs in history in history deserves a book that explains IN DETAIL the formation of Jack P. Pierce's road to the collodion and greasepaint in the early 1900's. Surely the man who was the father of the magnificient make up accomplishments which still permeate our society and have led to many later and contemporary practitioners attempting to emulate this man's work requires a volume not a cheaply produced magazine which takes 5 minutes to read.
DO NOT, under any circumstances pay out money for this pathetic excuse for a real biography. |
