Book Description

August 28, 1995 0810829967 978-0810829961
Numerous books, films, and articles on this famous case have appeared. No one was ever caught, or at least officially brought to trial, for the crimes.

Jack the Ripper: A Reference Guide is the only book to list all the real-life people (victims, suspects, witnesses, police, doctors, etc.) in categorical, easy-to-view style without adding irrelevant or extraneous information. There is no supposition or guesswork. Also included is an extensive, detailed bibliography that is not otherwise available in print.

This book is a valuable reference guide which will be an extremely useful addition in public libraries, and informative to those whose knowledge and interest in the subject ranges from the casual to the most experienced and dedicated.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Palmer states up front that this book "is primarily concerned with listing the known facts" and "not designed to draw conclusions as to his [Jack's] identity." The author presents the information in eight short, succinct chapters identifying the victims, witnesses, suspects, police, etc. Palmer's most daring claim is that according to his own past experiences with autopsies, the killer absolutely possessed some anatomical knowledge?a major point of debate among "Ripperologists." He also utilizes his firsthand knowledge as a Freemason to correct errors made by previous investigators regarding Masonic rituals. Beyond that, however, Palmer breaks no new ground. Although the book does fulfill its intended purpose, many other available titles, such as Paul Begg's Jack the Ripper: The Uncensored Facts (LJ 12/15/89), offer more for a lower price. The lack of photographs is also lamentable. Not recommended.?Michael Rogers, "Library Journal"

Review

The research efforts of Scott Palmer have produced a very handy reference guide on the Ripper. (Ripperologist )

Lists of Witnesses and Police are thorough... Another strength of this book is its bibliography. Palmer's Reference Guide is worth consulting. (Whitechapel Journal )

Of course, looking at this book and after reading it, this is a book for Jack The Ripper-fans, but I am sure it is interesting reading also for some people who just have read about or heard about this famous case... (Iwan Morelius )

...a particularly useful arrangement [of entries]...recommended... (Popular Culture In Libraries )

Another strength of this book is it bibliography. Palmer has a refreshing tendency to judge witnesses for himself,...is worth consulting. (Dr. Frederick Walker )

...a particularly useful arrangement [of entries]...recommended....... (Popular Culture In Libraries )

4.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed and thorough, October 5, 2008
This review is from: Jack the Ripper (Hardcover)
I was curious to know more about Jack the Ripper, and I found this book to be very helpful in an introduction to the case. It is very detailed, factual, and through. If you want a story about Jack the Ripper, this is not the book for you; however, if you want to know the facts I truly reccomend this book.
