Book Description

August 1982
Who really was Jack the Ripper? Was he a solitary assassin lurking in the shadows of gaslit London? Or was Jack the Ripper three men: two killers and an accomplice? In this work the author investigates all aspects of this strange case shrouded in mystery and misconception. The discovery of the murders is described by the men who were there, and evidence reveals that the hitherto unsolved Ripper murders were in fact a culmination of a full-scale cover-up organized at the highest level of government.

4.0 out of 5 stars A story about research and conspiracy., October 31, 2001
When I bought this book several years ago, I thought that it would just be one of the many conspiracy theory novels about the world's first serial killer. Instead it was an interesting tale of a conspiracy among the highest in the land. What I liked about Stephen Knight's book is its focus on research which was extensive and helped build up a picture of these murders, now over a century ago. While I do not know whether this is really true and that facts were properly interpreted, what is certain was there was a cover-up, which means that there was definitely something to hide. This may support Mr Knight's view that it was a cover up by the British Establishment to counter a blackmail attempt that would have had a destabilising effect on the British society of the time. The conclusions of this books are that poer corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the nightmares it gave me, July 20, 2002
This book was published in 1976 so it's hardly a new look at the subject. However, it's definitely an engrossing and convincing read, offering very good reasons why the Ripper was never caught. I remember writing to Stephen Knight at least twice about his book. Yes, he did reply.
One can only be glad that photography wasn't all that good in Victorian days. The photo of the mutilated remains of Marie Kelly is bad enough in black and white. In colour it would definitely have sent me running for the bathroom. As for my nightmares, they would most likely have been ten times as bad. My copy is in very good condition but is it really worth the prices being asked for second-hand editions on amazon.com?

4.0 out of 5 stars Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution, June 4, 2008
Very interesting book. If you've read From Hell, and you want to know a bit more about where Moore got his ideas, this is the book to read. There are a few leaps, I think, as far as Knight's conclusions, but for the most part, he does a very good job of investigation. It's the only non-fiction book I've read on the Ripper murders, and I can't say I know anything of developments since From Hell was written, but it has peaked my interest and I plan on continuing to learn about the subject. The most amazing part of this book is the final chapter, which, while it answered the biggest question on my mind while reading the book, I still didn't really see it coming. It's a major detail that Moore left out of From Hell, though I'm not sure why. A very good read.
