Editorial Reviews

This raw and rocking 2009 collaboration between Jack Rose and The Black Twigs features some of the most swinging, hard-hitting string music waxed in many a decade. Rose's solo playing has always had a tough edge, with his prodigious technique often employed to drop right-hand bombs. His use of a thumbpick originates from years of duets with Twig Mike Gangloff, struggling to make his guitar heard over Gangloff's crashing banjo. The front line of Rose and Gangloff's strings are joined by Isak Howell's no-nonsense guitar and harmonica and Nate Bowles' variety of expert percussion. The four lock together with a sure-footedness honed by frequent touring and a singularity of intent to rock. Gangloff takes the vocals, howling out standards like "Little Sadie" firmly in the old-time tradition--without reserve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revolt in The Bright Sunny South, August 11, 2009
There's a "Revolt" in the "Bright Sunny South" driving like a "Soft Steel Piston", and it will reach fruition "Some Happy Day". The revolt is against over-produced, over-refined-like-white-sugar country/pop music and in favor of hard driving energy chocked roots music and is being led by these young gentlemen. All the quote marks above surround song titles from this vinyl/CD/MP3 download ([...]) that will pump you out of pop and whirl you into a new world of deep honest sound. The technical perfection of acoustic guitar player Jack Rose, fiddler/banjoist/vocalist Mike Gangloff, guitarist/harp player Isak Howell and percussionist!/banjoist Nathan Bowles cannot be overstated. About half of these tunes are rockin and rowdy; the other half are bluesy and moving. All of them are fleshed out by complexity and delicacy and masculine power creating the feeling of standing with eyes closed beneath a sparkling cold waterfall on a sweaty hot day and nodding with the joy of needs well met.
