This review is from: The Jack Russell Terrier: A Comprehensive Guide to Buying, Owning, and Training (Breed Basics) (Hardcover)
I've been reading quite a bit about Jack Russells lately for my JRT hobby website (this is review #4 :) and I have to say that most of the books are pretty good and cover the same basic information. Things like the history of the breed, how to choose a pup, and the basics of healthcare.
This particular book by the Broadstocks covers much of this introductory material in a very readable manner. In addition, it has the best pictures I've run across, and in this regard it is more like a coffee-table book than any of it's competitors.
One shortfall I found was that it does not address how to puppy-proof your home. And there were sections, such as the discussion of diet, that were too brief. And in fact, if I was criticize the book I would say that it is uneven in it's treatment of the material.
For example, I absolutely loved the chapter on HAVING FUN WITH YOUR RUSSELL. They authors wrote at length about earth dog trials, service dog activities, showing and racing and other activities (the other books don't cover this, by the way). However, in other areas, like diet and clicker training, they gave the topics only the barest coverage.
All of this is fine if all you are wanting is an introductory book while you are day-dreaming about what pup you might bring home, but it's not a book for those looking for an at home reference.
Enjoyable. I liked it quite a bit but it "wasn't enough".
