Best book on Jack Russell Terriers I've found!,
This review is from: The Jack Russell Terrier: Courageous Companion (Howell's Best of Breed Library) (Hardcover)
In this book, Catherine Brown gives readers a true account of life with a Jack Russell Terrier. I have done Jack Russell Terrier rescue for several years, and have shared my home with many Jack Russell Terriers and can appreciate every single word she writes about this challenging and fun-loving breed. Her description of their true nature, along with her complete honesty about the breed, is exactly what people considering this unique little dog need to know. Readers will find all qualities of the Jack Russell, good and bad, in this book. I will be sending a copy of this book home with each person that purchases one of our puppies. I highly recommend it to Jack Russell enthusiasts and to anyone even considering sharing their life with these "thugs in white clown suits." It gives an excellent history of the development of this versatile hunting terrier, and provides wonderful insight into it's origins and purpose. A must have for any Jack Russell fan!

Practical Information Wrapped in a Beautiful Package,

Ms. Brown offers a comprehensive view of life with the average Jack Russell Terrier; she also warns us that there is no such thing as an "average" Jack Russell. The information is presented with humor and genuine admiration for this quirky, sturdy and brazen breed. The text is complimented with stunning color photographs of dogs and puppies in action. Ms. Brown also highlights some of the great foundation dogs and it is always a thrill to find one in your new pup's pedigree. This is a wonderful first book for those considering a JRT, and we veteran owners appreciate a reference book that looks beautiful on the coffee table -- it is a welcome relief from the dead mice our JRTs leave for us under our beds!

I am a Jack Russell Terrier owner, and I happen to know Catherine Romaine Brown. I've witnessed her devotion to this unique breed. For many years, and currently, she's served on the Board of Directors of the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America, (JRTCA,) the premier registry of Jack Russells in the United States.
Catherine and her dogs regularly participate in agility, go-to-ground, conformation, and other disciplines at Jack Russell Terrier trials. She is in demand as a judge at sanctioned trials nationwide and internationally. In my opinion, this book is the definitive guide to JRT ownership.

I've been reading quite a bit about Jack Russells lately (this is review #5) and I have to say that I really like this book. It's well written and personable, as Ms. Brown relates some of her personal episodes with Jack 'Terrors', and it's the only book with actual websites and phone numbers that you can call for information (US only). It also contains what is perhaps THE best description on what the 'showing experience' would be like; as well as THE best information on what hunting with a Jack would be like. There is really no area that this author addresses where she doesn't provide a different point of view from the other books, or more authoritative detail. A pretty book --made with good paper and plentiful photos -- this is simply a great follow on read if you want to take your Jack knowledge to the next level. Pam T~ inthebrief about a dog book

This has got to be the best Jack Russell book ever! Perfect descriptions of them and their larger than life personalities. I like that it tells people that they aren't just a dog for anyone - they are independent little guys. Very well written and great photos and little anecdotes.

The Courageous Companion provided a nice history about the origin of the Jack Russell Terrier and some good information about the breed as it stands today. I was looking for better insight into how to get a Jack Russell puppy to have its high-energy level satisfied via human play time and also how to facilitate a JRT puppy/JRT older dog relationship and I felt like many of these questions were left unanswered.
