5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Marketing Strategy
If you've never read anything from Jack Trout before, this is the book to start with! Trout on Strategy is the Bible of marketing strategy.

Trout is one of the most important business authors of our generation. While some disagree with his views (especially his view on line extension), he has undeniably helped to shape the thinking of the marketing industry...

I love Jack's strategic perspective. More CEO's and Marketing Executives should heed it. My personal disappointment with this book is it was in some cases, a word for word, cut-paste from his previous work. Maybe it's good he's put his previous works into an abreviated single book. But, personally, I expected new thinking. I regularly re-read some of his older books, so...

I regularly re-read some of his older books, so I didn't need to pay for the repetition. That leaves me wondering how to rate it. The content is a 5. But it's the same content I've already paid for in other books, so I have to knock a few stars off.

If you've never read anything from Jack Trout before, this is the book to start with! Trout on Strategy is the Bible of marketing strategy.

Trout is one of the most important business authors of our generation. While some disagree with his views (especially his view on line extension), he has undeniably helped to shape the thinking of the marketing industry over the last 20 years. If you are a business owner or marketing professional, you should not let another week go by without hearing what Trout has to say about "positioning" and "differentiation".

This book is essentially 2 decades of writing all rolled up into one relatively short book. Some other reviews I've read here complain about an apparent repackaging of information contained in previous Trout books. Personally, I am a fan of condensing information. I can re-read Trout on Strategy from time to time, and get a refresher on everything I've ever read of his. I would still recommend reading his other books, but this is a great "nutshell" version of his teachings. There's an awful lot of wisdom crammed into these pages. Buy this book, keep it in an easy to find place, and re-read it once or twice a year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for strategic executive focus, March 10, 2006
This review is from: Jack Trout on Strategy (Hardcover)
Trout has written an excellent guide on where an executive should place their strategic focus to drive a successful business. While it appears simple with its 8 strategies, the concepts and recommendations are powerful. The examples are strong, well known and easy to relate to. The strategies apply to small and large organizations alike. This book will make you think.

What one can gain from this book would be the best and most important writings from Jack Trout over the past 30 years. It teaches people how to win and conquer markets in a simplistic yet powerful and applicable manner. I would keep this book handy when I need to make sound strategic marketing decisions

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!, August 3, 2004
This review is from: Jack Trout on Strategy (Hardcover)
Jack Trout made his name with straight, pithy talk about marketing. This book falls into the Trout tradition. Although some of his core points - protect your differentiation, avoid jargon, focus tightly - have been said before, frequently by him, he has a good salesman's way of making it seem fresh and exciting. A reminder of certain basic, important verities is often useful, no matter how established they are. Trout is best in intense doses and much of what he has to say here, while not complicated, is true, practical and useful. Any marketer who reads this book will learn something of value. We find it a worthwhile addition to the promoter's library as a motivational handbook, a memory jogger or a collection of short servings of solid advice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Warmed over soup?, April 8, 2007

This review is from: Jack Trout on Strategy (Hardcover)
Trout presents the subject in a readable and interesting manner with good examples. However, the book may be described as Intro to Business Strategy 100 for the beginner. And, if you've read some of Trout's or Ries' prior works, you won't find much new here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommendation, November 1, 2004

This review is from: Jack Trout on Strategy (Hardcover)
My recommendation goes both ways. Over all the book is really good and I would definitely recommend it to people. It would be a good book for people that do not have much knowledge about marketing strategy and they would gain a lot by reading this book. On the other hand, I would not recommend it to someone who has already read quite a few of Jack Trout's books before. This book seems to sum up a lot of what he has to say in his other books. In fact, this book almost seems like it is trying to sell other books that he has written in the past. So if you have already gathered quite a bit of knowledge from Jack Trout, this book could be very repetitive to you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Straigh to the point, October 3, 2010

Jack Trout definitely touched on specific areas of marketing that are often misunderstood by society. This was an easy read book. And I recommend it for anyone interested in Marketing or starting a business one day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, nice intro/review of Ries and Trout ideas, December 17, 2009

This review is from: Jack Trout on Strategy (Hardcover)
I first started reading their materials 20 years ago and return to their books every couple of years for a refresher. This book is a compilation of some of the key ideas from their work. I purchased copies for clients who may not be familiar with their ideas.

This is a very easy read; small pages, big type and an even bigger message. Read a page or a chapter at a time; it works equally well.

If you have already read most of the books by Jack Trout, (or Ries and Trout) this will be a nice review, and perhaps motivate you to pick up and reread your favorites.
