Editorial Reviews

Many things have gone missing in this world: Amelia Earhart, D.B. Cooper, the Olmec civilization, Jeff Tremaine's waistline, even the whole continent of Atlantis. Most important and culturally relevant, though, is a big mess of Jackass segments that had apparently slipped through a crack in Mianus and never found a home on any of the DVD releases for the classic MTV television series. The “Self Defense Test,” “Stun Collar,” “Unicycle Poo Barf,” “Fast Food Football,” “Roller Jump,” and “Satan vs. God” (in its original long ass-kicking form!) are just some of the absurd gold that what was once lost but now is found, not to mention all the original show opens, credit montages, and a bunch of other bonus footage that was never shown on television—or wasn’t allowed to be shown—featuring Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Ryan Dunn, Preston Lacy, Wee-Man, Danger Ehren, and Dave England in their earliest years of basic cable fame and notoriety.

Luckily my local retailer shelved this item a week early so I already have it.

The stunts and clips on this are really some of the best the show had to offer and it was nothing short of tragic that they were left off of the boxed set. I am of the opinion that the boxed set was really poorly done in that it should have been episodic rather than just 3 conglomerations of edited down stunts and skits.

That being said I am really glad that some of these gems are finally on DVD. The original "Satan vs. God" is presented in all its uncensored (read unbleeped) glory. Knoxville breaking his ankle trying to jump the "LA river" on rollerskates is included and uncensored. "Self Defense Test" "Milk Challenge". All are slices of fried gold. The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars from me is that this material should have been released on the boxed set.

Bottom line is if you are a fan This is an absolute MUST have to complete the series.

If people would take the time to read descriptions they would know that this is not "totally unseen footage." What we have here is a collection of segments that were never released on DVD, plain and simple. There were many reviewers of the Jackass box set that were unhappy that some bits were left off....well here they are.

I'm tired of hearing everyone complain, saying that this was not unseen footage. No one, including Paramount ever said it was "previously unseen", but it is however previously un-released on DVD. Sure we may have seen these on TV, but whats it been, a decade since we've seen these skits. These skits specifically are the ones they don't show and haven't shown on TV for close to 8 years ever since they were sued for people attempting these certain early stunts.

I remember I watched the first episode the first night it aired. I loved Jackass from the moment I saw Johnny Knoxville was beckoning someone to "come wash my back!" after the poo cocktail. I really really did. One day, during the first season, in front of my fellow Ecology students, while wearing a pair of waders way too large for me I said "Hi. I'm Johnny Knoxville. And these are really big pants" The look of astonishment all my classmates gave me when they realized, yes....we all watch Jackass as our secret vice...became the moment I realized I was a part of a cultural phenomenon.

I have the original DVD's. I have seen the movies. I even have the "10 Years of Stupid Book." I loved these guys and would like to personally thank each one of them for sacrificing their personal well-being so that I can laugh (more on that later). When MTV shows old episodes I watch them. But there are certain bits that the network never showed anymore. The ones that I missed the most were "Human Raft" and "Satan vs. God" (the original). So when I found out the "Lost Tapes" exist, I had to have it.

But here is the problem with MTV DVD's...they swap out the music for some banal generic score and it truly loses something....something important. All of their DVD's are this way. What made the "Human Raft" so much more funny was having "Rock the Boat" from the 1970's playing in the background as Wee Man smilingly paddled while lying on Preston Lacey. And what made "Satan vs. God" so much more....touching???....was Joan Osborne crooning "What if God was one of us..." as Chris Pontius walked down the street lonely and alone as Satan...and then the young girls coming to his rescue when someone tried to beat him up.

These guys have made me laugh more over the last 10 years than I had in the previous 20. Such a random cast from different backgrounds but somehow it comes together to be the funniest thing on TV or video in 3 generations.

I found this DVD to pretty much be a rerun of their first season. I know there was some hang up with the first season footage, and this seems to have "fixed" it. There were some funny things on there, but I had seem them already. Some of those included:
Rugby
The Milk Challenge
Pontious as Satan
Skateboard Wheel
Night Monkey
Self Defense
Stun Collar
Fastfood Football

Also, the guys jumped into A Lot of bushes, which had been done to death in the first season. I was really disappointed because this is billed as new material and it's not.

Another thing that pulled it down for me was that these were the early skits where they didn't really have editing down. The funny parts were present, but so was all the dead air before and after. Yes, there were some funny things in this DVD, and if you're a fan it's for you, but this isn't one I'd buy. Renting it and seeing it once was good enough.

After getting the jackass boxed set I started regretting not having taped the old actual shows on VHS (remember those?). The boxed set was great but incomplete. After getting the lost tapes I was excited to see all of the classic bits once more. This includes every intro segment and every credit sequence which has material throughout. There's some over-lap as the too hot for TV material is shown here and elsewhere. I laughed and had a little trip down memory lane the first time watching this DVD. I don't intend to choose it over watching, say, the movies but I will pop it in occasionally. As stupid as jackass was it paved the way for others and I'd probably watch that crew and their antics at any age.
