Book Description

In the center of Long Island's forbidden wasteland, overseen by a large and powerful corporation known as Arc Properties, is GAMELAND, a virtual reality arcade where the rich and privileged act out their base fantasies using zombies as avatars. Connected to their Infected Undead Players via neural implants (government-mandated in the event of an outbreak) and using remote gaming controllers, Operators pit the monsters against one other in a high stakes game of money, violence, and power. For the poor, the televised action on state-controlled Media streams is horrifying yet powerfully addictive.

Volunteering to become an Undead Player is illegal, but the promise of fame and money lures some to The Game.

On a whim, a small group of computer hackers and gamers decides to sneak onto the island, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Uncontrolled Infecteds, unimplanted victims of the outbreak that took place there over a decade before. But while breaking in turns out to be a lot easier than any of them could have ever imagined, getting back out winds up being a hell of a killer. As they soon discover, when you play The Game, you play to win.

The series consists of eight episodes published monthly from May through December 2012. Individual episodes, episode packages and a full series omnibus available in ebook and paperback.

EPISODE 8: Jacker's Code
The shocking conclusion to the high-tech horror thriller, GAMELAND.

Jessie and the remaining gamers and hackers struggle against all odds to escape Gameland and Long Island alive, even though some of them have been infected with the zombie virus. Determined to do whatever is necessary, they have yet to face the most difficult decisions of their lives, not knowing if they will ever be able to return to the lives they so recklessly left behind.

The world is suddenly a very different place, where monsters aren't always kept behind walls. They can be anywhere.

Episode 8 is approximately 54,000 words (roughly 196 print pages)

About the Author

Described as an author with "a PhD and a whacked out sense of humor," Saul writes fiction that is heavily influenced and informed by his past life as a molecular biologist. His speculative tales range from high tech science fiction to medical mysteries to the paranormal. Often infusing his work is a dry humor and an incisive look at human behavior and the often futile nature of human endeavor. Saul grew up in a leaky century-old house overlooking the Erie Canal in Upstate New York. Convinced that his refurbished attic was haunted, Saul sought reason and rationality in science. But after a successful career studying genetics and entrepreneurial work in biotechnology, his past caught up with him. He now writes speculative fiction full time from his home in the San Francisco Bay Area. He shares his passion for writing with his wife and two kids, four dogs, three cats, twelve chickens, a wayward rooster, and one very grumpy possum, the last, he is convinced, is the reincarnated spirit of The Shining's Jack Torrance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall a darn good series, with a weak ending...... December 30, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition
Overall I enjoyed this series. I feel that 8 episodes were a few too many, with 6 being a better number. This last one seemed to be just filler, with not much action happening. A few storylines were wrapped up, but just as many were not answered. Sigh......I think I was expecting to see more of what was happening from the Player's point of view. This book was about gamers, but the last three or four episodes did not really pay much attention to this aspect. Still, I will check out a Season Two if Saul writes one.

More About the Author

Saul writes in several speculative fiction genres, including horror, cyberpunk, biopunk, and straight science fiction. A former Army medic and trauma specialist, he earned a PhD in molecular biology and genetics; his works are heavily informed by these past experiences.

Saul spent his formative years in a century-old house overlooking the Erie Canal in Upstate New York. He shared an attic room with all manner of creatures, not all, he is convinced, flesh and blood.

After several years spent overseas and working his way to executive positions in biotech, he returned to his true passion of storytelling.

He now writes full time from his home in the San Francisco Bay Area. He continues to be haunted by a variety of creatures, including a wife, kids, three dogs, three cats, twenty chickens, a wayward rooster, and one very grumpy possum. They are all flesh and blood.

Except for the possum, which he's sure is the reincarnated spirit of Jack Torrance.
