Grade 3-5-This biography of the contemporary African-American athlete covers her early years in East St. Louis, her college career at UCLA, her Olympic successes as a long jumper and heptathlete, and her personal life. Black-and-white photographs highlight her accomplishments. A page listing her gold-medal performances at the Seoul and Barcelona Olympics and personal bests proves her philosophy of "desire, dedication, and determination." The book has short chapters, large print, and crisp sentences. This is a briefer but more smoothly written book than Neil Cohen's Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Little, 1992), and is intended for younger readers.
