Grade 3-5-- These slim volumes chronicle the lives of four of the greatest stars in sports history. Although they provide only a brief glimpse at the athletes' lives, the information is accurate and readable. Standard, but well-reproduced, black-and-white photographs are plentiful and serve to break up the texts. An unnecessary gimmick is the inclusion of trivia questions (with answers in the back) that are sprinkled throughout each title. Very few, if any, of the answers will be known by the intended age group, while many, such as, "When he played for the Canton Bulldogs, Jim (Thorpe) was certain that no team could stop him. Exactly how confident was he?" won't even elicit a thought or a guess. While numerous biographies of each of these subjects are available, these titles are serviceable introductions that may lead readers to more substantial books. --Tom S.
