Gr. 5-8. This may be a part of the Overcoming Adversity series, but De Angelis' strong writing portrays Robinson as more than a plaster saint. Beginning with his childhood, which saw him involved in petty crime to days when he had to bite his tongue as he broke the color barrier, through his three-year promise to Branch Rickey to keep a lid on his emotions, Robinson comes across as real, justifiably angry, and determined to make a difference. A moving last chapter details the impact Robinson's struggles had on his health and his family. The highly readable text is made even more interesting by the addition of well-chosen black-and-white photos. Statistics, a chronology, and a bibliography are appended. Ilene Cooper
