Editorial Reviews

Jackiem burst onto the scene with his 'babysoul' on the tiny ARTizen imprint. His second, 'Lil' Man Soul' on Artistry Music, exploded his pop/urban melodies across the breadth of contemporary jazz consciousness via two #1 singles ('I'm Waiting For You' and 'Take Me There') which have together logged at this writing a total of over 21 weeks at the apex of the charts. His newest, the eponymous 'Jackiem Joyner', boasts yet more radio friendly tracks including the single 'Dance With Me.' The young composer/producer also stretches into new territory with the Slash-like guitar burn of 'Push' and the synchopated marching band drum opening of 'The Reunion'. All are sure to be favorites on the Joyner concert trail as he maintains double duty with both his bands as part of Keiko Matsui's outfit. As ever, Jackiem eschews the trends of big-name producers and guests stars, and does almost all of it himself - playing, producing and composing. There are a couple covers: Aerosmith's 'I Don't Want To Miss A Thing' and the King of Pop's own 'Off The Wall', and a guest guitar solo from Paul Jackson Jr. on 'Turn It Up' (which he captured while both were on tour in Reading, PA).

They really turned me off, not letting me hear the sax, which PROBABLE was quite good.

It's really strange because I really liked the radio singles from this album/cd. "Dance With Me" is this really beautiful Latin flavored song that I originally thought was a cover of Madonna's "La Isla Bonita." I also liked "Home" and I think it was also "Pushed" that they played on the radio that I liked. And "Turn It Up" may have been another one that I liked from the radio.

However, when listening to the whole album put together, it just sounded fast, loud, and out of control. And I even turned the volume down when listening to this album, which helped a little bit, but I still wasn't able to enjoy the music on this album. However though, don't get me wrong, I like fast and mid-tempoed songs, but the selections put together as an album, just didn't work for me.

And perhaps it's an age thing because I see that there were quite a few other reviewers who really liked this album. However, with noisy songs such as "Reunion" with all the 'marching band drums' sounds, etc., all that I can say is that I'm a lot more removed in years from my high school and college days than Jackiem is and perhaps than a lot of his fans are too.

And one more thing. I gave this album two stars instead of one because I recognized and appreciated Jackiem's efforts in wanting to be innovative and have a different type of a sound from the other smooth jazz albums that are out there.

Jackiem Joyner has now made three studio CD's and I have all three of them; while I have truly enjoyed the previous 2, this is by far his best CD. This CD features instrumentations not heard in the previous two CD's and there's not one song on this new CD that won't have you dancing to the up-beat tunes or grooving to the balladic sounds of his smooth saxophone! I highly recommend this CD and would love to see this artisit perform live in concert!

Love how Jackiem Joyner is daring to mix a hip R&B sound with Sax Jazz without a lot of vocals. The best change in music because this genre's music can tend to sound all alike from one artist to the next. Others need to sit down and think of some different sounds to mix with their wind and string instruments-- and make sure to purchase Joyner's "Baby Soul" CD. You'll love it!

I had a chance to meet jackiem in Seattle night club in 2010 while visiting a buddy of mine. I have since seen and met him again and was still blown away by his horn
