5.0 out of 5 stars KINLOCH WILL WEAR YOU OUT!!!
Finally! I have been waiting for "Jackie's Back" to be released on DVD for 3 years! I have also been waiting for LifeTime to replay it for 3 years! This movie is a hidden treasure that many did not catch the first time, but is filled with good times and lots of laughs. The writing is smart and funny. The casting is right on. This is the kind of movie that when your watching it your asking yourself, "Why am I watching this move?!" It's so terrible that it's good!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dynamite and Funny as you know what, but that ending...., April 1, 2002

Loved this movie. There are SO many genuinely funny and campy moments here. Patti Austin at Peaches Yancy's funeral is a hoot; the woman just won't STOP singing! Jennifer Lewis is fabulous and so is young lady that plays Jackie's faithful daughter Entendre (Make that a DOUBLE Entendre). The only complaint I have is the ending. All of the sudden we get this bittersweet, force fed weeper ending which doesn't fit into the framework of the rest of the movie. Overall, though it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the movie. Just a minor quibble, since the ending of ANY movie does leave an impression. It almost has the feel of something that was forced on Robert Townsend by the Network. Maybe not. Please buy this DVD, though. If you appreciate the ridiculous excess of modern and classic Divas you'll love it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!, December 25, 2005

This review is from: Jackie's Back (DVD)
This was one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. A friend of mine who hadn't seen the movie before viewed it recently and felt like a little kid in a candy store. It's that good! Jenifer Lewis was a hoot playing the character of this ficticious diva. She was perfect for the role and is truly underrated. I couldn't believe this was a Lifetime movie!!! The movies on there are usually so sappy but this was totally different thanks to the direction of Robert Townsend. He truly broke the mold ten-fold with this movie. There are so many funny moments in this movie that I can't list but watch closely to the facial expressions of the characters especially Jenifer Lewis' and Tim Curry's characters. They are simply timeless. This is the type of movie you can watch over and over and never get bored. I wish this movie was released in the theaters it would have had moviegoers falling out of their seats. It's that funny. It also has a large list of celebrity cameos from Whoopi Goldberg to Dolly Parton. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who hasn't seen it. It is simply hilarious and you will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Make it a double, Entendre!, February 28, 2002

This is not a movie that's so bad it's good. This is a very funny movie, especially knowing it was made for Lifetime. Jenifer Lewis is hysterical as Jackie - she's over-the-top, especially as Aphrodite in a Nightie and in all her drunk scenes. Most of the other performances in the movie are spot-on, and there are some hysterically inspired moments with, believe it or not, Whoopi Goldberg and Isabel Sanford. The treacly ending (when it does turn into a Lifetime movie) notwithstanding, this is a funny mock-documentary about an over-the-hill black diva who never really was anyone to begin with. Tell your friends and your play mama to check this out.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I'm still HUGE in Kinloch !!!!", January 22, 2006

Jenifer Lewis is a force of nature! I never tire of watching this movie. It is laugh out loud funny. Having seen her one woman shows "The Diva Is Dismissed" and "Now What?", I can say that "Jackie's Back" only hints at what she's capable of. Bette Midler has said that Jenifer is the funniest woman in the world and that is not an overstatement. "Jackie's Back" is a great showcase for Lewis. The best lines were probably ad-libbed. The musical numbers are ace (I would love to hear the full version of "Love Goddess"). There are several funny cameos -- particularly Whoopi Goldberg -- and the other featured players are good, however, the movie suceeds on the strength of Lewis' considerable charm and talent. Don't miss this!

5.0 out of 5 stars My new addiction, December 9, 2005

This review is from: Jackie's Back (DVD)
I saw this mockumentary when it premiered on Lifetime back in 1999, I think, and loved it then. When I saw it in the video store recently, I grabbed it and have seen it 5 times already. Be sure and watch it once with director Robert Townsend's commentary. It's really amazing that Ms. Lewis's project attracted divas Minelli, Midler, Whoopi, Jackie Collins,as well as a cavalcade of comedic cameo turns. My favorite is the brilliant and underused Loretta Devine as Jackie's childhood friend--has me screaming every time I see it. Jenifer Lewis, eerily resembling opera star Leontyne Price, caftan, turban and all, turns out a great comedy performance. What a pity that it never got developed into a TV series. This film shows what a great leading lady Jenifer Lewis is. Needless to say, Blockbuster, I'm not bothering to return this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!, September 20, 2005
This review is from: Jackie's Back (DVD)
I have this movie on video from when I taped it off of Lifetime 5 years ago. I'm so glad they finally put it on video and DVD. Jenifer Lewis is so funny and like the Color Purple there are so many memorable quotes from this movie. My favorite scenes are when they flashback to her past albums, and when she goes home to Kinlock, MO. This is a MUST HAVE for your movie collection!!

This is, now, my favorite movie. Actually, it gets funnier every time I see it. You always catch different things like Jennifer's facial expressions that you may have missed before. A great buy for any movie buff.

A side note, the DVD has no bonus features.

I have been looking for this movie for TWO years!!! Jenifer Lewis is one of the most versatile actresses in TV and Film. I laughed so hard at this "mockumentary" that I cried for days. I taped it from Lifetime but I watched it so much that the tape broke! I am so happy to have found it on Amazon! My friends will die when they know I found it! I can't wait to have a Jackie's Back Party!
