Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Robinson pays tribute to the values that she believes exemplified her father's life in this collection of pieces, the majority of which have been published in earlier books. PW said, "The result feels a bit cobbled together, but Jackie Robinson's voice is compelling." Ages 8-14.

I have used this book for high school, middle school, and elementary school students. Jackie Robinson's daughter Sharon emphasizes character traits that we hope our children learn to embody. The book is a quick, easy to read packed with powerful images of Jackie, his family, and important historical figures like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For $4.99, you cannot find a better value for your dollar. Personally, I pull it out every now and then to review some of the strong characteristics we can all strive to maintain.

In the sports world, the two people most responsible for the breaking of the color line are Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson. Branch Rickey was a wealthy white man so he was largely insulated against the vitriol, but Jackie had to take the field and face the public. For years he was forced to keep silent against the abuse, demonstrating the power of his character as he excelled on the field and won in many ways, including the won/loss column.
The purpose of this book is to give examples of nine principles that guided Jackie as he stayed the course and altered the very fabric of the United States Those principles are:

*) Courage
*) Determination
*) Teamwork
*) Persistence
*) Integrity
*) Citizenship
*) Justice
*) Commitment
*) Excellence

While a lot of the material was written by members of the immediate Robinson family, there are pieces about character by and about others that have exhibited a great deal of it. Christopher Reeve, Carl Rowan and David Robinson write three of the most memorable pieces. One that I was happy to see included described the time when the racial abuse of Jackie was most intense and his teammate Pee Wee Reese stopped the game to show the world that he was on Jackie's side. One aspect of the integration of baseball that is sadly understated is the instances where white teammates of black players went far out of their way to stand up for them. When it happened it really made a difference.
Jackie Robinson suffered to change America for the better, it is fitting that his number has been retired throughout baseball. The difference that he made simply cannot be overstated and this book is a sample of the events of his life and the consequences of what he did.

Love the nine values Jackie chose to guide his life. This book is a great companion to the theme I am using in my classroom this year on setting goals for yourself. Our school social worker is going to use parts of the book to go along with her behavior plan for the students to use this school year. She is going to use the nine words from positive sides to promote school co-operation among the students. Some of my fourth graders wanted to use some of the words to go along with the goals theme.

I think this book would be an excellent read aloud. It definitely causes many discussions to arise from the students. That in it's self should be enough to help make the decision to purchase the book.

...And that's what it took for Jackie Robinson to take on a game that contained mostly white men. Known for stealing bases, Jackie Robinson did more for major league baseball than anyone. Carrying the pain of discrimination, sacrificing for his family and boldly& intentionally erasing the stereotypes of a black man to be apart of a great american sport. He's advanced not only black history but also american history.
Thank you so much Sharon Robinson for her account of being raised by such a man. Now all people including our youth can read and personalize the nine characteristics that Jackie Robinson incensed himself with.

Though he's not alive today, I believe he'd be very proud of his daughter Sharon. For this encouraging work. May this book encourage you whatever race, religion, or color.

It's an awesome way to celebrate a modest, smart, and couregeous african american man.
