Manitoba--or Caribou as this outfit's known since a certain ridiculous lawsuit--is the best thing happening in electronic music today, and this e.p.'s a nice show of their work: creative, fun, danceable, good enough you'll laugh out loud, and QUALITY. The songs on this CD also appear on the two-disc version of Manitoba's "Up in Flames" album.
All the songs on this e.p./single are great, but the best one, the one worth raving over, the one you'll play over and over, the one I can't believe wasn't included on the actual album is "Thistles & Felt," which is full of sharpness and density.
The songs starts with a handful of thumps and chirps and triangle-type tings, and then launches into a rising wave of fun sound. Everytime I hear it I think of a cold dark world, glinting here and there from ice and hints of light, and then, suddenly, the sun begins lighting up the edge of the planet and curving over and covering it, and all the childern of the earth prance out in a line as long as the planet, happy and dancing and holding hands.
Listen to it--I swear it sounds like that.
All the songs are good though, and to know and love this band/musician is to want to own everything they've ever recorded...this included.
