4.0 out of 5 stars Replacing Vinyl February 23, 2001
Format:Audio CD
Most likely, you're buying this CD 'cause you're replacing a vinyl copy you haven't heard in years and remember it being a great album. It is, no doubt. It's amazing we never heard any of his music on the radio after "Romeo's Tune." There is an incredible amount of talent in this song writer who continues to produce music today (over 20 years after the release of this album!).
This CD and his debut album (Alive on Arrival) should be in the collections of all folk and rockabilly fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time August 1, 2006
Format:Audio CD
Contrary to some of the other commentaries, this is the second album that Steve released. It was recorded "live" in the studio (no overdubs). As a result, the recordings have a great late night feel. In my humble opinion, this is his best album. Romeo's tune was a huge hit and remains a great song but Say Goodbye to Little Jo, Sweet Love that you Give, Wait, and I'm in Love With You are all classic Steve Forbert tunes as well. Make it all so real is a great little story, Baby is a little ditty to a newborn, the last song will be familiar to anyone who has returned post college to one's hometown for a night out with the old crowd, complete with the classic album ending line (they say that life is strange, but compared to what?). The first album is very strong, but this one has a sound that he has never had on any other album and a consistency that can't be matched.

If you want to explore later stuff, Mission of the Crossroad Palms is superlative.

4.0 out of 5 stars NOT QUITE....... August 10, 2000
Format:Audio CD
.....up to the standards of Steve's incredible debut album, "Alive On Arrival," but still a great piece of work by one of the most talented and under-appreciated artists of our time. This recording contains Forbert's only commercially successful single, the catchy and melodic "Romeo's Tune," but there is so much more here.
Forbert's dead - on take of everyday life, "Complications," is an early example of his witty lyricism. "The Sweet Love That You Give (Sure Goes A Long Way)" is a great foot stomper. "Make It All So Real" is a wonderful ballad.
Steve has always had the ability to rock, to entertain, to mix optimism with a dose of reality. He handles both ends of the spectrum, and everything in between, equally well. He takes a back seat to no one as an accomplished lyricist.
The highlight of this recording, in my opinion, is the beautiful "Wait." It is virtually impossible to listen to this song without being reminded of every time you've ever felt as though the world had just fallen on you. The song's prayerful chorus - "God help the lost and the lonely, God help the poor" moves me every time I hear it.
If you don't have any Forbert music in your collection, you're missing an opportunity to witness the talents of a gifted artist.

Before buying this CD (which is good) check out Steve's really great collection
'The Best of Steve Forbert - What Kinda Guy?'
It includes several cuts from this CD but offers a whole lot more overall - 19 cuts in all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Nostalgia Trip June 26, 2007
Format:Audio CD
I loved this album as a teenager and I'm so glad it's out on CD! How to describe Steve Forbert? Country-alternative? Aw heck, if you're like me you're buying this album because you can still hum it 20 years later. "Meet me in the middle of of the day, let me hear you say, it'll be okay....

4.0 out of 5 stars Good to see this available as an MP3 download. December 23, 2012

I recently downloaded this album as an MP3 because there aren't any CDs available out there. I had this album on vinyl when it first came out which I gave away when I made the switch from vinyl to CD years ago. While I wish I had kept many of my vinyl albums (including this one), I am glad it is available in an MP3 format. Downloading it from Amazon to my computer was fast & easy, as was burning it to a CD for use in my home stereo system. I'm happy to have this in my music collection again. Forbert has always sounded great and digital enhances the listening experience.
