5.0 out of 5 stars Groovy! As great as I remember them from my childhood! January 14, 2013
Format:DVD
I received this set directly from the publisher, and hoped that it would be as great as it was in my memory of 40 years ago. The Jacksons burned up the music charts when I was a tween and of course Michael owned the charts in the 80s. Every kid I knew watched the Jackson 5 cartoon on TV, and we sang their songs on the school bus.

I'm happy to say that this 2-DVD set is every bit as good as I remember. The colors are bold and the sound crystal clear. It's actually better than when it appeared on TV because of the improved sound and picture capability of today's technology. Add in the bonus of no TV commercials and you've got a perfect trip down memory lane. All 46 of the remastered songs sound great!

Yes, the story lines are sappy, but they were a product of their times and I like them much better than the TV shows full of sexuality and bad language targeted towards our kids today.

This collection will probably appeal most to children of the 70s or fans of the Jackson 5 and their music, but I'm happy that the old shows have been re-released on DVD format.

The nostalgia factor can be a show's best friend or its worst enemy. I can easily imagine that the viewers who got caught up in the animated adventures of the Jackson Five during the short lived show from 1971 "Jackson 5ive" will be thrilled to revisit their old friends. However, let's face it, the show aired for 23 episodes over forty years ago. That means that this DVD release will likely be viewed through very modern eyes both by those who have never heard of it and by those who might not even be familiar with the Jackson Five. As I sat down to this flight of fancy, I immediately recognized the trademark psychedelic look of the time, the cheesy dialogue, and the infectious pop soundtrack. In short, it was pretty much exactly what I expected. That doesn't necessarily mean that it was good or bad in my estimation. It simply means that what you get out of "Jackson 5ive" is directly proportional to your expectations going in. And in truth, I'm not sure modern kids will be able to appreciate the madness as much as their parents.

Michael, Tito, Jermaine, Jackie and Marlon are portrayed as the leads of this series. The plots might have been slight and silly, but there are some intriguing episodes as well. Most successful for my taste is the premiere episode. Featuring a fictionalized account of how Diana Ross discovered the kids, it was kind of kicky to see how this paralleled real life. Other shows strayed into fantasy territory, however, and are more hit and miss. A common theme had Michael (the youngest) getting into some kind of mischief that the gang had to extricate themselves from before the episode ended. Again, the better episodes should be more greatly appreciated by those with a working knowledge of the kids and their history.

5.0 out of 5 stars A childhood favorite December 31, 2012
Format:DVD
As 6-7 year old black child growing up near Charleston SC in 1971-72, I have a special place in my heart for this cartoon. This show told us that it was okay to dream big and that we could live out whatever fanstasy we had about what we wanted to be when we grew up (of course I did not analyze it this way it the time, but it was deep in our subconscious in retrospect). For years fans of the show had to settle with , ahem..."unauthroized versions," but now the wait is over!

As for the content of the show, nostalgia and animation quality aside, its not as bad as some say. "It All Started With" (which had the dubious historical disctinction of airing Sept. 11, 1971, during the Attica riots and 30 years to the day before....) is the legendary PR tale that was widely believed at the time of Diana Ross discovering the J5. This is actually quite comical as the J5 con their way into the studio and the Berry Gordy caricature is amusing. "Cinderjackson" has Mike desiring to go out on a date with a "princess of pop" that eerily presages Whitney Houston (the afro-wearing "hairy godfather"-NOW HOOOOLD IT! is his catchprhase-is hilarious). "The Wizard of Soul" has the J5 in the land of Oz, which also predicts "The Wiz" by some seven years! "Groovatron," a funky soul-dancing robot, appeared some three years before the J5's "Dancing Machine" and the popular "robot" dance! "Rasho Jackson," as noted on another website, predicts the events that led to the actual breakup of the J5 a few decades later! The writers of this show were far more on the ball than anyone realized at the time.

One fascinating episode, "Ray & Charles Superstars" features the J5's pet mice Ray & Charles (clever, eh?

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Fun December 19, 2012
Format:DVD
I welcomed the opportunity to preview this set of Jackson Five animated stories from over forty years ago. Hard to believe it's been that long. Despite the age of the animations, the sound, color, and clarity of the picture are first rate. I was impressed by the vividness of the colors and the richness while watching the animations on both my laptop and our HD television.

Most of the plots are timeless. The boys are confronted with a problem or a villain and figure out a way to solve the problem or defeat the nemesis. In each episode two songs are integrated into the plot seamlessly and impressively. The style of the animation at times reminds me of Rocky and Bullwinkle with amplified color or the Beatles' Rubber Submarine movie. Many of the themes are still topical today like destruction of trees and natural environments and kindness to animals.

The 70s styles and expressions were nostalgic for me as were the songs and the language. It's been many a year since I've heard phrases like: I'm hip, Let's slide, Right on, Can you dig it, Cool cats, Funky, Swinging, and Ready to jive. It was also amusing to see one of the characters playing music on a reel to reel tape player. I think even young viewers will get a kick our of the language and the ever present bell bottoms, tie dyed shirts, and puffy Afro hairstyles.

This Potato Head thinks that the Jackson Five Animated Series can be enjoyed by a whole new generation of viewers who haven't heard the music of the Jackson Five and who haven't seen the psychedelic animation style of the 70s. And the music? It's just as enjoyable now as it was in the 70s.

Note - I don't recommend watching an entire DVD's episodes in one sitting back to back to back to back etc. like I did. Each episode begins with the A-B-C theme song that, as much as I like it, eventually grows tiresome with so much repetition.

My 9-year-old is always interested in watching "old" cartoons. He loved these. And having him singing Jackson 5 tunes from the early 70s is just fine with me!

This show is a "wholesome" escape from the Disney and Nickelodeon dribble that dominates children's media. Reasonably safe content for all ages.
