Having gone through several cheap digging tools while metal detecting I was going to buy a lesche digger and then I saw this one for sale. Reviews where good so I ordered it and gave it a try.

Apparently this is an upgrade from the model under 15$ by the same company. After using this tool extensively I love it. It is well balanced and very sturdy. The sheath with catch to keep digger from falling out is also very nice.

The serrated and cutting edge work well for cutting plugs and sawing through roots. It is very sturdy, I have used it to chip through gravel and have placed all my weight on it to pry with ( I'm a big guy) and it doesnt budge.

This thing is attractive in appearance, comforatable and easy to use and virtually indestructible. The only thing I can fault it on is that if you dont wipe of your blade well before sheathing it that dirt gets stuck in bottom part of sheath and is very hard to get out.

Hope this review helps...

The inspiration for this seems to be the Japanese hori hori garden tool, but they have added functionality. This baby is heavy and sharp, if you drop it from waist height, it will easily stick into the ground. The flat end on the handle makes it very easy to push into the dirt by pressing your palm flat against it. It makes you wonder why more hand held garden tools don't have this feature. BOTH sides of the blade are sharp, one side serrated, the other is flat blade. It comes with a holster that you could clip onto a belt, but I don't see myself using that much.

You can blame my choice of this tool in the failure of an Amazon Market place vendor. I originally ordered a Japanese Hori Hori digging tool. But for whatever reason, the Hori Hori never left the warehouse, Amazon refunded, and I stumbled across this tool while looking to re-order.

The VersaPlanter is like the hori hori on steroids. The tool has a bit of heft to it and is all made of stainless steel with a rubberized grip. It clearly gets it's inspiration from the hori hori, with it's jagged serrated edge on one side, but at this point the similarity ends and different features were added. It has a straight edge opposite the serrated edge, a hook to snag and cut twine or roots, and a notched weeding tip. The spade-like blade is not flimsy and has stamped measurements for setting bulb depths, but is more narrow than a normal hand spade.

Make no mistake, this thing is not for shoveling dirt, and should be kept away from little ones - this thing is for powering through tough roots and soil. It comes with a rigid sheathe that it clips into for safe keeping and can attach to a belt, though honestly, it probably won't spend much time in it unless I make a day of it, hacking through the overgrown areas of the back yard.

After using it for about 10 seconds in my garden, I realized I was grinning while stabbing the dirt. In hindsight, I'm glad no one came along to find me looking like a plant axe-murderer, but you get the idea - it made digging in tougher conditions less of a chore.

I'm very glad that the hori hori guy never shipped.

Very very good tool. Very strong, with sharp edges on the slightly concave blade. Superb for digging, weeding, planting, pounding in small stakes, cutting small branches, and has a graduated measure on the blade for planting. The sturdy sheath has a catch inside so the tool doesn't fall out, but the tool is easily removable. The sheath also has a belt retainer clip, but does not have loops to thread the belt through. Other than that minor consideration, this tool is remarkable! I think it was based on the Japanese 'hori-hori' gardening tool.

I have never had a tool like this for the garden. I give it a gifts to all my gardening friends. This tool is everything that you might want when you are in the garden. It digs, it cuts, it weeds. You can't go wrong with it. I would suggest putting orange tape around the handle as you can find it in the greenery if you lay it down.

This is an awesome tool for the garden. I have purchased many such shovels but none so versatile or of such quality. I like the carrying case as it can hook on my jeans and I have it with me as I move about the garden. An excellent addition to any gardener's tool collection.

This tool actually makes weeding fun. It is so sturdy and strong that a 70+ minimalist gardener can easily dig out dandelions. I saw it mentioned in Sunset as one landscape gardeners indispensable tool. I'm sure it will last forever.

I have been using this tool for over a year now and it is wonderful. It has a nice scabbard that clips easily to my belt or whatever I am wearing to I put it on anytime I go out in the year and it continually comes in handy digging up weeds, opening packages, cutting twine, pounding in stakes, roughing up root bound starts before transplanting, etc. I would recommend this to ANYONE who spends time in a yard and/or garden.
