Book Description

January 1, 2004
Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol rewritten from Jacob Marley's point of view of view -- an entertaining new twist on this familiar holiday tale. Jacob Marley, Scrooge's partner, finds upon his death that he must redeem Scrooge's soul. Marley is in fact the one who thinks up the idea of scaring the wits out of him.

Funny, irreverent, and moving -- and presented in a beautiful illustrated gift book package -- Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol is becoming a favorite holiday classic.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I'm delighted to have the old clank-meister back in print, and it's very gratifying and heartwarming to hear from the readers who love this book. Thank you!
A word: a couple of people have been upset to receive the Samuel French Acting Edition rather than the novel--FEAR NOT! If you purchase the hardbound edition, you'll receive the illustrated novel, not the playscript. For those of you who are looking for it, the paperback edition is the playscript. Enjoy! --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

About the Author

"The first year I played Scrooge in Chicago's Goodman Theatre's annual production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, my close friend and brilliant director Terry McCabe brought his children to see a matinee. At lunch afterwards, his ten-year-old daughter Hazel Flowers McCabe commented that she thought "Jacob Marley got a raw deal," (arranging Scrooge's ghostly visits, but remaining in chains himself.) We all agreed she had a point.

That idea rattled around inside my head for the next few years of playing Scrooge. Finally, I decided to set right this injustice, and wrote my own version of Scrooge's redemption, in which Jacob Marley is, deservedly, much more center stage. It was originally read on December 21, 1994, and received rave reviews. Adams Media published it the next year, beautifully illustrated by Larry Wojick, and it became a bestseller.

In the book, I begin with an apology, that closes with: "I approach Dickens' masterpiece with fear and trembling, but I take comfort in the knowledge that however this effort is received, A Christmas Carol will remain pristine, unbesmirched by my muddy little footprints.

But hopefully, there will be one less sad old ghost clanking about through eternity."

I hope you enjoy this. -T. M. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific, December 4, 1998
By A Customer
I had the pleasure of seeing Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol in Chicago at the Goodman Theater over Thanksgiving weekend (performed entirely by author Tom Mula). His performance inspired me to read the book. I don't know which I enjoyed more! Both, in a word, terrific!

5.0 out of 5 stars Destined to be a Christmas classic Dickens would have liked., April 5, 1999
By A Customer
Marley and the bogel take the reader on a wonderous journey through Scrooges transformation from crudgemudgon to Christmas spirit. Author Tom Mula has created a story destined to be a Christmas classic in it's own right. In the Dickens style the reader views Scrooges change from Jacob Marley's side of the picture. Aided, and sometimes abeted, by the bogel Marley leads Scrooge, himself, the bogel, and the reader along the path to the true meaning of Christmas. Any who read it or have it read to them cannot help but enjoy this story. Bravo to Mr. Mula for creating this work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful, sensitve and delightful book., October 29, 1998

Mr. Mula has created more than an outstanding tribute to the Dickens' original; he has created a modern classic in its own right. Jacob Marley's case is taken up with humor and sensitivity as we follow his personal journey to redeem his former partner, Ebenezer Scrooge.

A wonderul book with enormous insight, JACOB MARLEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROL will touch you as much the ninth time as it will the first.
