Excellent teacher resource material. Great for teaching writing, reading comprehension, and fact organization. Easy to follow instructions with useful examples. Implementation is immediate and student understanding can be well documented.

This book is an exceptional teaching tool for gifted teachers as it allows students to climb the ladder of success in various literacy activities. By using this step process, students have the ability to add to the fabric of their work through the various rungs of the ladder. It would be a wonderful tool for any teacher to have in their resource library.

Jacob's Ladder is an excellent resource of teaching for students of all ability levels, but especially those needing more higher level thinking skills. This book gives teacher friendly ideas with short reading selections that challenge those hard to challenge students. This book is full of ideas and interesting readings for students. All the information and materials you need are right in this book!! The activities are fun, easy to use, and challenging for all students. Each ladder represents different activities and challenges the students in different ways. This is a great resource for deepening the thinking of your students!! This is a must buy!!

I currently use Jacob's Ladder in my 2nd grade classroom. I have been amazed and thrilled at the level of discussion that is developing amongst my students concerning literature. The students are supportive of one another, and they freely share opinions and ideas as we participate in discussions of not only the selections in Jacob's Ladder but also in our read-alouds.

I love that Jacob's Ladder teaches the children to support their answers with evidence from the text. The students will even remind one another to "go back to the story" when answering questions.

Jacob's Ladder is a great resource for bright and gifted readers. I have used this wonderful material for the last few years, with much success. The students are pleased to be able to share deep feelings and opinions about what we are reading and discussing. They take ownership and enjoy the challenge of the ladders, going from basic skills to more difficult activities. The stories/poems are thought provoking, the ladders are challenging and the children are willing--a great combination for positive, exciting experiences in reading!

Jacob's Ladder-Level 1 is a great resource for language arts instruction. It uses fables, mythology, non-fiction text, and poetry to scaffold student reading responses from simple skills to higher-level thoughtful responses. I love how it exposes students to a variety of genres and helps students build the skills necessary to write in-depth responses.

I have used Jacob's Ladder in a variety of ways over the past few years and have found it to be a great resource. I love the fact that it not only provides the opportunity for students to think and comprehend at different levels, but it also makes them aware of the various skills they are using to think about the text. The level one is a great place to start. I have found that I use these selections with some of my students in higher grades that are not reading at grade level, but benefit from the opportunity to dig deeper into a text.

I have used Jacob's Ladder with my high ability readers for a few years now. I really like the fact that the reading passages are short enough to be read in a few minutes so that the students can concentrate on completing the ladders and really reflecting on their thinking. There is a great mix of fables, myths, poetry, and non-fiction written by adults and kids. Once the kids learn the different ladders, the program pretty much runs itself. You get incredible work from the students with very little new teaching time. They are able to take the skills they learned and apply them to the different pieces of literature. You can easily compare the ladders over time to see the growth in your students.

I found Level 1 to be a great scaffolding tool for my high-ability and gifted learners. I also use the Jacob's Ladder levels 2 and 3 for learners who are on a 4th and 5th grade level. The tasks within each ladder rung truly hit the heart of the literature piece and provides great opportunities for deep discussions. I really like how the units include different types of literature and much of the literature pieces are written by students, which make great writing connections. This is highly recommended for teaching students who are not quite ready to hit-the-ground running with the William and Mary units.
