Book Description

June 12, 2007
When her husband left her for a younger woman, Rose Franklin bought a camper and started traveling. Eventually, she put down roots in Shady Grove, a campsite along the Mississippi River in West Memphis, Arkansas, where she has lived for six months now. Since she solved the murder of Lawrence Franklin, life has been quiet: she is enjoying her new friends, life next to the river, and a blossoming romance with neighbor Thomas Sawyer.
But when Rose discovers a mysterious camper from New Mexico dead in his trailer, she finds herself in the middle of another mystery. American Indian artifacts, an ancient cultural history, and a passage to grace are at stake as Rose unravels the murder, while at the same time comes to terms with a visit from her ex-husband and her father's declining health.

Jacob's Ladder is a thoughtful follow up to Down by the Riverside, featuring a curious and spiritual sleuth.

"Jacob's Ladder is the perfect summer read. Pull up the closest hammock, pour yourself an iced tea, and settle in for this romp of a book."
---Philip Gulley, author of Home to Harmony

"In Jacob's Ladder, Jackie Lynn has reprised her wonderful cast of West Memphis riverbank dwellers. It's a fast-paced, funny ride down the river with cleverly drawn characters worthy of the journey."
---Sallie Bissell, author of In the Forest of Harm

"Jacob's Ladder is perfect light reading for sleepless nights and an exploration into the concept of innocence rewarded."
---Katherine Valentine, author of The Haunted Rectory, and the award-winning Dorsetville series

"Lynn elevates the genre with her blend of philosophy, romance, spirituality, and elegant writing.... This is a truly lovely book to be read slowly, savoring life by the river in the cool shade."
---The Kingston Observer (Massachusetts) on Down by the Riverside

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Lynn's unconvincing second Shady Grove mystery (after 2006's Down by the Riverside), Rose Franklin, who's settled in at the West Memphis, Ark., campsite since her divorce, discovers an elderly Zuni Indian man strangled to death in his camper the day after he pulls in at the campground. While waiting for the police to arrive, Rose finds a silver bracelet near the crime scene and pockets the trinket instead of mentioning it to the sheriff. Later Rose decides to return the bracelet to the scene of the crime, but rather than drop the bracelet, she hides in the camper when she hears people approaching. To her distress, someone drives the vehicle away from the campsite. This episode is symptomatic of Rose's heedless actions, as she ignores blatant clues, trusting naïvely when she should be more suspicious. Seasoned mystery readers will likely find Rose's feckless detecting more irritating than believable.

From Booklist

Lynn's Rose Franklin (Down by the Riverside, 2006) is back with a new case. Still living at the Shady Grove campsite in West Memphis, Arkansas, she discovers a body in a trailer parked in a remote area not open to campers. An American Indian bracelet that she finds at the scene sends her on a quest for information that may help her determine why the man was killed. As she searches for clues, she finds herself involved with kidnappers, outlaw bikers, and the FBI, as well as the local sheriff. A visit from her ex-husband and his young trophy wife adds to her confusion. Rose's second case delivers a touch of spirituality and some fascinating facts about Native American culture, all interwoven with a solidly constructed mystery plot. The real appeal here, though, is the trailer-park community, which is full of colorful characters only too ready to offer opinions on just about everything. Bibel, Barbara

This review is from: Jacob's Ladder (Shady Grove Mystery Series #2) (Hardcover)
It's been six months since Rose Franklin arrived in West Memphis, Arkansas. She ended up on the banks of the Mississippi River at the Shady Grove campground after her Ford Bronco broke down. She solved a murder and since then, it's been pretty quiet.

Rose has settled into the daily ebb and flow of life at Shady Grove. She's helping Mary who runs the campground, has made friends and is enjoying a romance with a local man.

But one night a stranger from New Mexico, Jacob Sunspeaker, drove into the campground and parked his travel trailer in a part of the campground that wasn't used. The next morning, Jacob's dog is found wandering around. With the dogs help, Rose finds Jacob murdered in his trailer.

A silver bracelet Rose finds on the ground near the trailer is the only clue to Jacob's murder. Her curiosity is piqued and she becomes determined to solve the crime. But along the way she will encounter Indian artifacts, some danger, and she will be forced to face her father's imminent death. The relationship was never a good one and will challenge her ability to forgive. But in facing her father's coming death, Rose will also have to interrupt her romance. You'll wonder if that is for a brief time or forever.

Once again Jackie Lynn has given her fans an interesting and unique mystery that is made better by the intriguing characters she plants in her novels. I can't wait for the next Shady Grove Mystery.

Armchair Interviews says: Highly recommended.
