5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for fifth grade.
As a fifth grade teacher I read Jacob's Rescue for the first time with my class after our reading teacher spoke so highly of it. She and I will continue to include it each year. It is a great book to spark an interest in fifth graders about the Holocaust. The fact that it is based on true events manages to hit home that this awful and tragic event ACTUALLY happened.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Holocaust was terrifying for young Jacob, January 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Jacob's Rescue (Hardcover)
We are the most excellent and often noisy class of 5T from Holland Elementary School in Holland, MA. We read Jacob's Rescue for literature study in our unit on the Holocaust. The book we just read is about when a Polish family tries to keep alive three Jewish brothers during the Nazi occupation in World War II. The story is about a boy who was saved, along with his brother, from the Warsaw ghetto. They lived with a family, but they still felt scared of the Nazis. The book tells about the terrifying encounters with the Nazis. There are several reasons why we liked this book. It tells in great detail what happened to regular people during the Nazi occupation. We liked the part about when the family fled Warsaw because we were glad that they were able to escape to safety. We liked Jacob's Rescue because it was an emotional and realistic book. It made some of us cry when people died. It made some of us shout for joy when people got away from the Nazi invasion. Some of us had a few criticisms of the book. Because the book was so realistic there was a lot of violence and death. Some of us did not like that. People were blown up, people lay in puddles of blood, and a dead dog was dragged away to be someone's dinner. Some of us also felt the pace of the book was too rapid; the book lacked detail because it moved too quickly. At one point they skipped two years in Jacob's life. We got a little confused about characters' ages at different points in the book.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Jacob's Rescue (Hardcover)
Jacob Gutgeld a 8 year old Jewish boy that lived in Warsaw, Poland. In 1939, Nazis soldiers invaded Warsaw, Poland. Being Jewish wasn't safe anymore beacasue the soldiers were out searching and killing Jews.

Meeting a Christan man name Alex Roslan one day. Alex helped out Jacob by being his new uncle. Since he is moving in with the Roslan he has to leave the rest of his family behind. He might never see them agian. But now he has to live with danger everywhere he goes. To find out if he can managed to stay alive with the Roslan's read this excellent book about Jacob's Rescue, a Holocaust Story.

I would recomend this book to kids of all ages. This is a really good book, it has loads of action in it, and has a very good storyline. I liked this book because you learn lots about the past and how life was in 1939. But I hope that you enjoy this wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A GREAT BOOK!!!, February 9, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Jacob's Rescue (Paperback)
Jacob's Rescue by Malka Drucker and Micheal Halprin is an awesome book to read. It starts with Jacob getting captured by the Nazis and being put in a ghetto but for most of the story he is kept in a small apartment.

This book is about an 8 year old boy named Jacob and the extremely brave people who rescued him, Alex and Mela. There were also two brave kids the son and daughter of Alex and Mela. Jacob is one of the Jewish people who got put in a ghetto. In this story Jacob loves to play cards and do math. The whole story starts when Jacob gets put in a ghetto. Their problem is they have to find a way to stay safe without getting caught and being killed. My favorite part is when he escapes from the ghetto and goes with Alex to his new home.

I gave this book five stars because many of you know how many Jewish people got killed because of the war. This book is about the few people who went way out of their way just to save two Jewish boys life. I think that just to know that people would be so giving is a great thing. I think that Malka Drucker and Micheal Halprin did a great gob on this book and I hope that there are more books of theirs that I can read. I would recommend this book to a friend because I think that it's cool to know that two boys' lived through a war because of two people that saved them.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Jacob's Rescue (Paperback)
This book was great. It had action, historical facts, excitment and adventure. It was detailed but it didn't make it boring. The book is about the Holocaust. It was so good I didn't want to put it down. At the end of every chapter it left you guessing what was going to happen next. It was also good because it was all about a story a girl's dad told her at their Passover dinner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jacob's Rescue, May 18, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Jacob's Rescue (Paperback)
Jacob's Rescue is a sad and adventurous book based on a true story about a little Jewish boy named Jacob and his life during the Holocaust. This boy had to live with a family of people he didn't even know, had his name changed to Genyek, and had Nazi soldiers on his tail. Jacob doesn't mean to cause any trouble but because of him the Roslans had Nazi soldiers search their house many times, and he partially caused one of their own kids to die. I liked this book because it was very exciting and it always left you wanting more.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Jacob's Rescue (Paperback)
Jacob's Rescue was about a rich Jewish boy who gets put in the Ghetto with his Aunt Hannah and Grandma. Then Alex (a Polish man with a wife and two two kids) decides to hide him. Jacob has two brothers David and Shalom. There are many problems but in the end it all turns out well. Read the story to find out the true story of Jacob's rescue. It is a very good book about World War II and the Holocaust which lasted from about 1939 to 1945. I liked the way it was always exiting and kept me on the edge of my seat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jacob's Warsaw Survival, February 8, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Jacob's Rescue (Paperback)
This is an amazing story of a young Jewish boy during the Nazi occupation of Poland. Jacob is his name, and he is given a chance to live with a brave Polish family. The Roslan family takes Jacob in and protects his brothers and him. This now united family must go through many hardships throughout this story, but there is still happiness and gratitude flowing in the text. Alex the father is the bravest of them all. He keeps the family alive and healthy.
This book tells a well rendered real life experience of a very brave family. It explains what was going on in Poland from the peoples view not the generals prospective. In this book Jacob tells this story to his daughter. Think of finding out that your father was living through an adventure story that had dire conflicts.
What I'm saying is if read this book if you want a idea of what happened to people that were brave and fought in their own way during World War 2.
