Makes a HUGE difference,
By Laurenagi (Ohio) - See all my reviews

Tie Dye is one of the first techniques that I teach annually in a Fiber and Textile class. Absolutely, no doubt about it, the Soda Ash dye fixer makes a huge difference in the final result. Using it yields deep, vivid colors that stay gorgeous after many washes. Without Soda Ash, the colors look great at first but almost immediately fade away to almost nothing. If you are going to go through the effort of proper tye dying, you need to use this or you are wasting your time and money. Mix 1 cup Soda Ash per gallon of warm water, soak (pre-washed) fabic for about an hour, then wring/squeeze water solution out of fabric by hand... it's ready to tie dye. Use it.

This is KEY in dying any fabrics. However, you can purchase it in bulk at any pool supply store, and no shipping, yay!

...but it is overpriced here. Try to procure locally if possible. I found it locally for half the price I paid on Amazon...and I am usually pleased with Amazon prices. I did not do enough pre-purchase research on this one.

Soda ash comes with the jacquard tie dye kit, but I needed extra. Soda ash really is the key ingredient when doing tie dye because it keeps the dye from fading and bleeding. Our tie dye shirts and pillowcases still look great even after many washings, and I attribute that to the soda ash.

No complaints, you get what you see! One bag of soda ash. Buying this one saves you money... at the local store you get only a little bit of the soda ash for only a couple of dollars less. Might as well get more of it for a little bit more money.

I used this to soften water for my aquariums. I had to control hardness now ever since our water softener broke down. You just have to do it slowly as the powder clouds the water and takes time to clear out. If you overdo it, the water becomes so alkaline and you will need acid powder (from Walmart) to balance PH.

The dye we had might have been old or I might not have used the right amounts of soda ash for our tye dye project but the colors all were very light after washing.
