Book Description

Harlequin Historical January 1, 1997
The Town Preacher And The Town Madam…

Haunted by his sordid past as the notorious gunslinger Nevada, Reverend Wade Weston had declared war against sin in the small town of Hanging Tree, Texas. But he hadn't counted on the arrival of the exotic Jade Jewel, whose visions of building a pleasure palace threatened the peace of the community, and whose person aroused in him passions that threatened to claim his immortal soul.

Diamond, Pearl, Jade and Ruby, The Jewels of Texas. Four sisters as wild and vibrant as the untamed land they fought to protect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ruth Langan never fails her readers!, June 21, 1999

Langan writes classic after classic! Jade is so funny and charming, she'll grip your heart and keep a hold of it forever! I only have one more Jewel book to read and I can't wait! The story of Pearl is bound to be as funny and charming as the rest!

2.0 out of 5 stars Predictable, unimaginative, and no emotional depth, October 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Jade (The Jewels Of Texas) (Harlequin Historical) (Paperback)
Although I don't usually read Harlequin romances (for the exact reasons stated in the title), I gave this one a shot because of my particular fondness for multi-racial historical romances, and the dearth of literature that fits that sub-genre. Despite the novel's unique premise, the story itself is bland, trite and unimaginative. At most, the story seems like a nicely structured and fleshed out outline, without the nuance and emotional depth necessary to make the characters interesting or story compelling. One would think that the conflicts between a virgin madam and a reverend seeking redemption would be a lot more thrilling, but Ms. Langan's writing lacks the maturity to fully develop or articulate the characters' emotional battles with each other and themselves. Furthermore, the story resolves in an unsatisfactory manner, mainly by making a cheesy happy ending that unrealistically ties the hero and heroine together without ever dealing with the social and moral implications of their union (i.e. really, a whole town would accept the continued service of a reverend who had pre-marital sex with a madam who ends up converting her brothel into a church?). The entire story reads and resolves with as much believability and predictability as a young-adult novel.
