Jaguar is a very exciting book that will keep you turning pages. It is about a young boy named Jake Lansa. It is a series from the first book, Thunder Cave. Jake's gransfather is a Hopi Indian and his father is a field biologist, Robert, who is called Doc. Doc is helping his best friend, Bill to make a Jaguar reservation. But when the boat mysteriously explodes, it kills Bill and injures Buzz, the pilot for the Jaguar tracking device. Doc decides to create the dream of his best friend with his son and his girlfriend, Flanna (Jake's mother died), along with a strange person named Silver who has a boat ready for them. They reach the reservation spot, and with the help of Raul, an Indian, they track a jaguar mother and her 2 kids. Doc falls ill and a terrorist who knows Silver takes over. It seems that their reservation spot is near a gold mine, and a few like Silver and the captor want to get rich. Flanna killed him and they were safe. If you want the whole story, you should read this great book! You can also read The Last Lobo, which continues from Jaguar.

This is a great book to use for the classroom. I plan to use it in my 6th grade Language Arts class. This book has it all - great characters, superb plot, survival/adventure aspects, and internal and external conflicts. I look forward to reading more of Roland Smith's books.

4.0 out of 5 stars A South American Adventure, February 22, 2009

Jaguar: By Roland Smith

Roland Smith's "Jaguar" is an adventurous novel about a boy and his relationship with his father while they work on a jaguar preserve in South America. Jake Lansa is a typical teenager, but when his mother dies he has to go searching for his father in Kenya, by himself. He finds him. His name is Dr. Robert Lansa, but there is a problem. The problem is that he and his father are not very close, and Jake has never called him "Dad", he has always called him "Doc".

Skipping ahead a few years, Jake joins his father in Manus, somewhere in South America, where they are working on a jaguar preserve. The suspense builds when a boat blows up killing a crucial member of the preserve team. Now Jake and his father have to decide if they want to keep going with the plans to maintain the preserve or call it quits and go back home. When a suspicious looking boat captain offers to take them up river so they can reach the preserve, they have no choice but to say yes. That decision sets up an unfortunate chain of events for Jake, his dad, and the rest of the team.

Life at the preserve gets more suspenseful when Doc and Raul go searching for animals to collar. After being gone for so long, Doc returns terribly ill and can't even walk. Raul is captured by some local Indian tribe who is holding him hostage. Also in this wild adventure, Silver disappears from camp in search of an ancient landmark but trouble comes his way when the rest of the team needs to get back home and they don't have a captain to drive the ship. Jake goes looking for them and is able to find Silver and free Raul and is still able to get back home safely.

Jaguar is a non-stop, action packed novel that is hard to put down after the first sentence! It has elements of suspense, love, family relationships, growing up, good vs. bad, danger, and it takes place in the beautiful Amazon Rainforest. I would recommend this book to everyone who loves adventure in the palms of their hands.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Jaguar, August 26, 2005
This review is from: Jaguar (Paperback)
Though this story was written for a younger audience it remarkably contains orignal characters and a fast paced yet believable plot. If you're an adult definity buy it for your kid and maybe even read it yourself, because surprisingly most adult novels lack the realism that Smith brings into his stories.

This book is just as good as Thunder cave. It deals with Jake Lansa again as this time he follows his father to the Amazon rain forest. This is one of the best books I have ever read! I hope there will be another book to follow.
