4.0 out of 5 stars Jah Love Rockers, June 3, 2008
This review is from: Jah Love Rockers (Audio CD)
Two discs. 68,66 min. each approximately. Remastered sound. As the sub-title says, this is revolutionary music during the rockers and steppers era, which was from 1975 to about 1980. This era in Jamaica was frought with gun-play and lawlessness. This was tempered with Rastafarianism, the religious message popularized by many Jamaicans, most notably Bob Marley. This music was very important because most every song had a message for the people. The stories and advice were wrapped around some insidious beats. This was not merely music with a message, but was recorded for dancefloor use. As such, the rhythms are prominent in the arrangements, but this isn't dub or anything outlandish, just good dance music in the "Rockers and Steppers"style. This is music you can't help but want to get on the dancefloor and groove to,but it also carries a message. Some well-known artists are on this collection. People like Johnny Clarke,The Heptones,King Tubby,Dennis Brown and Horace Andy are here. The tracks in this collection are actually closer in style to rocksteady than anything else. When all is said and done, this is just a fine collection of tracks, whether one listens to the words, loves the grooves,or both. This is one of those sete that seems to get lost in the shuffle. That's a shame because it deserves to be heard and enjoyed by all lovers of reggae.
