Before this album, Ziggy, his brother, and his sisters seemed more like a rich lady's kids than heirs to the throne of Bob Marley, the emblematic Third World Sufferah. But with their fifth LP release, an ambitious effort set in an overstuffed 16-track CD, the Marleys ably assume the burden of their legacy. Ziggy and the Melody Makers-- Stephen, Cedella, and Sharon Marley and Erica Newell--globalize and modernize roots reggae with infusions of rock & roll, funk, rap, and electronic dance music, most notably in "Good Time," an irresistible invitation to lusty dance floor abandon that showcases Cedella, Sharon, and Erica's lush, highly personalized harmonies. In "What a Conquerer's Defeat," an otherwise negligible tune, Stephen steps to the plate with a take on his dad's "ole codger" voice and gives off hints of a superb stylist in the making. --Elena Oumano
