Hard-edged, honest dose of Americana roots music,

David Childers and the Modern Don Juans deliver a musical care package for those wanting a hard-edged, honest dose of Americana roots music. Jailhouse Religion is packed full of sad, twisted tales that do not always have happy endings and exist somewhere in the margins of life, neither black nor white.Childers and company are not locked into one groove or stalled by traditions. Elements of gospel, country, and hard rock ignite songs about religion, hard times, regret, and political history. Childer's exhortation "Welcome to the dark ages" in Dance Macabre and his invocation of sharks in General Belgrano are but two of the high water marks he hits with his lyrics. His band--who both help write much of the music and who need to be seen live to be fully appreciated for skill and appearance--do not disappoint: Mark Lynch plays bass, Randy Saxon guitars and banjo, and Childer's son (or is it his brother?) Robert drums. Course, most folks have never heard of David Childers as even the so-called alt-country Americana format doesn't give this music any airplay. So why did this recording shoot up to the top spot on the Euro Americana Chart? Because it's damn good, that's why. |
