Product Description

In one of his best-loved films, Elvis Presley stars as a small-time convict who uses his time in prison to practice music, then goes on to become a big-time performer. Co-stars Judy Tyler and Dean Jones. Year: 1957

Amazon.com

Elvis Presley's third and best film is this musical romp released in 1957, just as the Big "E" was reaching the peak of his hip-swiveling pre-army success. Filmed in ultra-cool black and white, the movie stars Elvis as a good ol' boy who saves a woman from an assault but kills her attacker, so he's convicted of manslaughter and sent to jail. While doing time he takes up the guitar and becomes a singing sensation, ready for the big time when he's finally released. He becomes a big star but his inflated ego gets him into trouble with his former cellmate and his new girlfriend. Short on plot but heavy on rock & roll, this EP classic features such hit songs as "Treat Me Nice," "Baby, I Don't Care," "Don't Leave Me Now," and, of course, the classic title song, performed in an elaborate jailhouse number that Elvis choreographed himself. This is Elvis in all his big-screen glory, and the movie's upbeat ending made it a huge success during its original release. --Jeff Shannon

This was Elvis' 3rd movie and on the threshold of Rock & Roll. Jailhouse rock proved that Elvis was a talent and Rock and Roll was a true threat to Pop Music!

Now for the 1st time on Blu-ray 1080p widescreen "Jailhouse Rock" even in black & white was one of Elvis' greatest movies giving us his triple allstar threat performance!!! (singing, dancing and acting) You can see his serious commitment to the acting art.

This Blu-ray / 5.1 True Dolby HD recording is absolutely wonderful. A MUST HAVE have Elvis milestone movie/ semi musical. (before they became sappy and Elvis was sterotyped) The HD is fantastic, clear and the 5.1 music is priceless.

Believe me this, this is Elvis early wonderfully enchanting and at his best!!

Extras include; featurette, commentary (great background info on Elvis), dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack (original mono sound track too) and theatrical trailer.

This is the one for Elvis fans and music lovers!! Enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the Kings best films...great restoration! August 8, 2007
Format:DVD
One of Elvis' very best films ( I know that's not saying much but this IS a good one)...and its been upgraded substantially by Warner Bros from the previous edition.
the bonus featurette is okay...could have been much better with more artists and less "writers" as talking heads...Russ Tamblyn was a nice addition!

an all time Rock movie classic ...and from my standpoint a must own..
black and white and widescreen print.

5.0 out of 5 stars His best movie! February 18, 2003
Format:DVD
This is definatly Elvis's best movie. He does such a great job and he looks wonderful. Some really good songs, especially the title song, Jailhouse Rock. Really recommend it for those who are and for those who aren't Elvis fans. It's just a great timeless classic.

living fast, dying young, and leaving a good-looking corpse. That is the opening line from 'True Romance,' and I couldn't have put it any better myself. Elvis' best movie and one of the best ever. If you ever wondered why Elvis was so big, watch this movie. He defines cool. I went on an Elvis kick and watched a bunch of them. When I got to this one, I couldn't believe how good it was. It's not cheesy happy-go-lucky like most Elvis movies. It's got heart. The music is great and Elvis' performance combines Michael Jackson's dance moves with James Dean's attitude, only he did it first. He's a rebel who plays by his own rules. This is one of the most underrated movies ever. It's never mentioned when the best movies are discussed, but it definitely should be. If you miss when rock was still rock, you'll love this movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars The King at his cinematic best September 21, 2002
Format:DVD
A dynamic presentation of Elvis' true acting skills and some great songs. In an ironic reflection of real life, Vince Everett's [Elvis' character] cellmate plays a manipulative con, taking control of Elvis' talent - much like Elvis' real manager - "Colonel" Tom Parker.
Best seen in widescreen mode, the DVD offers both that opportunity, plus the standard full-screen pan & scan version.
A must-see movie, whether or not you are a fan of the King.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis' Unrealized Acting Talent. June 23, 2012
Format:DVD
Viewed: 6/12
Rate: 9

6/12: Most critics panned the film Jailhouse Rock when it first came out, and they found Elvis Presley's acting "stilted." I strongly disagree. There are two memorable scenes for me from Jailhouse Rock. One, obviously, is the music video that is very famous for two reasons. It's the first music video of its kind, and the whole video is well choreographed, actually by Elvis himself. Yet it was just a rehearsal. That is what made the whole thing amazing. The scene has been reported to be the first scene shot during the filming schedule, so they started with the best and worked their way down. The black-and-white on Elvis is simply beautiful. Two, while not as universally acknowledged, I found the kissing scene along with that iconic quote "That ain't tactics, honey. It's just the beast in me." between Judy Tyler and Elvis Presley to be one of the best scenes I've seen, considering the fact that I've seen thousands of films. But this is as perfect as it gets. Elvis played that one perfectly. I replayed that one several times, and it was just flawless. In the entire time watching Jailhouse Rock, I've felt that Elvis was trying to imitate Marlon Brando and (more of) James Dean, and my suspicion was confirmed by that fact that he studied their styles. This one was a good move because that particular style suited him well. If he was taken seriously as an actor especially in dramas, I think he would have been as good. The old question back then was: "Can he sing?" We knew the answer. Now, it is, "Can he act?" I emphatically say yes. This was a very good piece of acting, considering that he had no formal training of any kind. Back to Jailhouse Rock, it was quite all over the map, lacking a real direction.
