who knew a jak racing game can be this good?,
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Jak X Combat Racing (Video Game)
This game was really surprisingly good. I must admit ,at first I thought this game wouldn't be really good, but it really exceeded my expectations. The game begins when jak , daxter and their friends are invited for the reading of Krew's will. (Krew was the big fat guy from jak 2 .)When they get there, they meet his daughter, Rayn. she pours everyone some drinks , so they'll have a toast for krew. After they all finish drinking, Rayn plays Kre's will. He appears as a hologram , and he informs everyone that the drinks they just had have been poisoned!(He even poisoned his own daughter). He says that his associates will give them the antidote only if they win the Kras city championship race (since it was his dream to win this championship), so jak and his friends are forced to race for him.
Now , through the entire game , you don't just drive one car. There are 12 cars you can drive , and you can fully customize them , and replace their body parts. You can change their front fenders, rear fenders , trunks , wheels , and more. You can earn more body parts by winning races. You can even change the color of your car, and tune it's performance. One good addition to the game is the expanded secrets menu. You can get tons of secrets(by buying them with money you get from winning races),such as extra accesories for your car , extra movies, extra characters to drive with , etc. It's all just real awesome. There are three modes you can play , multiplayer (which includes online and local modes),adventure, in which you play as jak and advance through the storyline , and exhibition , where you can shoose different characters to play with(all of which have different attributes and characteristics) , and you can race in any track and in any type of race for money. The jak series has always been known for their variety. And this aspect returns here too. The game has normal races , where you have to just finish a number of laps around the track , but there are also tons of other game modes , like death match , where you just have to destroy the other racers, sport hunt , where you have to kill a bunch of monsters , death race, where you have to shoot as many cars as you can(not real racers, but weak smaller cars) and many , many more. Now , about the pick-ups. There are 4 types of pick-ups here. One is health , which simply heals you car. The other is turbo , which let's you use a turbo boost . The third is a weapon power up which lets you use forward - facing weapons , such as machine guns , missiles , etc. And the last one is backward - facing weapons , such as mines , oil streeks , etc. This game is a really awesome game. Don't worry about the fact it's a racing game.

This game is so sick. I haven't played it online yet. I don't have a network adapter... I got my friends in to it, though. There's a dvd being awarded out to people who win this contest @ jakxdvd.com for a demo of JakX and a 90 min. movie related to the Jak & Daxter games, 1-3. JakX beats MarioKart any day of the year. I already unlocked a grip of the characters. I like how they made it possible to hook up to the Daxter PSP game to unlock extras that way. They thought ahead. Very good multiplayer game.

The Jak and Daxter series is amazing. People argue that the second one is the best and I agree, but they are all very good. This one is also good, just naughty dog decided to go in a different flow. They decided to go with racing, combat racing that is. I thought this was a great choice because people who are getting bored with the action/adventure Jak's they can play this one which is a totally different flow, but with the same theme.
Now the Jak and Daxter series is known well for its great fantasy story-line. They didnt do too bad with this one, but I already knew the story-line wasnt going to be as good as th last ones because its hard to come up with a good story-line for racing games. You're Jak as always and combat racing has become the most popular sport in the Jak world. Before Krew died he made a bet with an amazing racing team meanwhile Krew had nobody to represent his team. So after Jak won the world race in Jak 2 he made a poison that he would give him and all his friends so that they would be forced to race for him if they wanted the antidote. As you probably know, Krew died in the second game so he was not able to give Jak and his friends the antidote himself so he got his daughter to do it. Now you must race as Jak to save your life by winning the championship. The gameplay is great. The thing that makes it so great is that its not just racing its combat racing. So you get to shoot your opponents with various weapons oyu pick up throughout the race. The game has all different kinds of races that you compete in. It has the circuit race, turbo races, time limit races, demolitino derby and more. This lets you not get the feeling of being bored, the only problem i have with all this different kinds of races is that you dont see as much circuit races as i would have liked to see. Another problem with the racing is that the tracks are not made too well. What i mean by this is that many turns are way too sharp and most of the sharp turns come after a jump so you end up going up the jump and not being able to turn in the air so you crash into the wall in mid air. Also your vehicle flips over a lot which gets annoying. Probly the level that has the most of this is haven city, in the sewers. The controls are great and easy to get into. And a cool thing about killing someone or when your car blows up is that everything goes into slow motion and it shows the car totally get destroyed and crash into the wall and do flips and stuff. And once you blow up your not eliminated, you just start over from where you blew up and they have your car moving already so its not like oyu have to wate for acceleration. The car doesnt have that many cars, only like 12 or so, but the game lets you customize your vehicles which is great. Throughout the game you win new parts like body, wheels, front pannels and sidepannels and what not. Its great. The game also has multiplayer, only i wish you could do more than just two players. But you can unlock new characters by having your memory card in with the previous jak games saved data on it. You can get characters like thee first jak and second jak. The game also has online play where you can join clans and stuff. The graphics are decent, just like the last jak game. Really no improvments which sucks, but in this one there really isnt much of cut-scenes. I would have liked to see more cut-scenes because i love the characters in the Jak world. The sound is also good with the machine guns and rockets, they sound great. This game is excellent, not quite as good as the previous ones but it gives Jak a new flow. I would really like to see an new one and you should defenitely pick this one up especially if you liked the jak series. The game is rated Teen for: Crude Humor, Fantasy Violence, Language, Use of Tobacco.

I bought this game because I am a fan of Mario Kart. I was not disappointed. This game is not nearly as cute as Mario Kart, but since I do not have any nintendo consoles, this is the best I can do.
Many of the race types are exciting. Sometimes it is more like Twisted Metal than Mario Kart. It can be frustrating. It seems like no matter how well you race, you will win or lose in the last 5 seconds before the finish line. Overall I am pleased and at the price, it cannot be beat.

The game is great. It picked up nicely from Jak3. The graphics is great, the story is great, the voice overs are great. 5/5. It's much more enjoyable to play online because it'll end up feeling like a new game each time you join a lobby. Playing online can be addicting.
There's a basic story line, which serves to give you a motive to racing. It's not just racing missions, there are also "death matches" which you'll use a weapon as you drive to destroy other players. If you're good at FPS (first person shooters) then you'll dominate. There are also "Capture the Flag" and "Artifact Find" missions along with some others. When you're done with the game, it's best to replay all the missions in order to get gold in every one (if you haven't done that first off). Your boosts will change color and it's supposedly faster than what you orignially started off with. Then when you play online, you can show it off ;) The vehicle controls are similar to Jak3 with the exception that you're now able to use both analog sticks to maneuver the vehicle (left for direction, right for acceleration and brakes). You have primary weapons that will upgrade if you do well as you're playing the mission. The weapons will suddenly upgrade in the middle of you're playing to make it easy on you. You can do a lot of damage. You're also given defense weapons that you'll leave on the tracks for the vehicles behind you, or save them to deflect missles that target against you. This game is great. I'll continue to play for years no matter my age.

Fun Kart Racer,
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Jak X Combat Racing (Video Game)
This review was written by James Shea, my son.
A continuation and spin-off of the Jak and Daxter series, "Jak X: Combat Racing" is similar in method to Mario Kart or Diddy Kong Racing - a car-based version of a platformer game. There is, however, a plot to the game, unlike some other spin-off games. Jak and his friends from Jak 2 and 3 are gathered to read the will for Krew, the now-deceased crime lord from Jak 2. From the grave (represented by a holographic message), Krew poisons all present with a "special vintage" of wine that serves as his funeral toast, and then says the antidote will be given to them by one of his associates if they win the city championship. After this, there are many twists as the various racers go through the championship mode. The gameplay is based on the driving in Jak 3. Many of the controls should be familiar to players of that game. Like most spin-off driving games, there are weapons to be collected such as mines, missiles, and machine guns, and driving-based bonuses like turbo boosts and power sliding. The cars handle decently, and control is for the most part acceptable. There are many upgrades for the cars, as well; these change the handling and physical appearance of the cars. For the most part the cars themselves have a rough, Mad Max style appearance, with a pretty good variety of car types. There are different colors and accessories available. The graphics are about as good as the later Jak games, and there are cutscenes to illustrate the game's storyline. The audio is, again, the same as the Jak games. There's a fairly nice consistency; despite its racer status, it still feels like part of the total series. Overall, this could've been a lot worse. It wasn't exceptional, by any means, but for a "kart racer" spinoff, this could've been a lot less well done. The fact that it was tied into the real story was also a nice bonus. But, mainly, it's so generically done that there isn't any reason to recommend or not recommend it. Rating: 7/10.

Do not buy this game! It has a saving glitch that may make your memory card completely unusable. I bought this game, was effected by the saving glitch, which I didn't know about, & ruined a $30 memory card. Google "Jak X: Combat Racing save problem". It can also corrupt all other data on your card. This game should not be sold & be recalled.

Relatively boring plot, but exciting gameplay,

I hesitated to buy this game when it came out because I knew it wouldn't be as interesting plot-wise compared to its three predecessors. And I wasn't wrong about that; it certainly lacks the depth and intrigue of the last two Jak games. But I also assumed the gameplay would be fairly dull too since it came out so soon after Jak 3. That was where I was wrong. This game is definitely exciting to play, and I commend the programmers for being able to put out such a polished racing system in a relatively short time. It's a fast-paced game with great action that makes you really pay attention and get involved. It's not very difficult once you get the hang of it. The only problem is that upgrading cars and getting new cars and accessories is kind of a boring process (to me, though it might be interesting for others). There's also a way to get more accessories and stuff by having saved game files from the other Jak and Daxter games or Ratchet and Clank, but I couldn't get my PSP to link to my PS2 in order to get the Daxter game save to be recognized (not a big deal though).
All in all, it's certainly a good game to add to your collection, especially if your a fan of the Jak series (somewhat reminiscent of Crash Team Racing for the PS1). I haven't played multi-player mode yet, but I'm sure it is fun too. |
