About the Author

I am a children's book author and illustrator and part time astronaut. I like making Kindle books. I live in a small castle beside the River Snood with my chums Lord Treacle, "Mousy" Mousington and Otto Fishblanket. We often go treasure hunting and then come home and have tea and cake, and sometimes, if the weather has been particularly inclement, tea and teacakes.

I like this book because Jake bakes cakes and such, as well, CAKES! I'd recommend this book to beginner readers. Beginner readers like books like this, so that is why I recommend this book to little kids.

My kids absolutely love "If I Had A Hat" so I snagged this book up too. Although I don't think it's quite as good it's still a wonderful children's picture book. The rhymes are cute, the writing simple and logical and the artwork is enjoyable. My kids love it! Amazingly you can read the book over and over and not gain an ounce of weight.

"Jake Bakes Cakes" by Gerald Hawksley appropriately is subtitled "A Silly Rhyming Children's Picture Book". Jake does indeed bake cakes of every sort. The story proceeds through a series of whimsical cakes Jake bakes, such as an upside down cake for acrobats, cheese cake for mice, carrot cake for rabbits, etc. Appropriate and silly illustrations accompany each type of cake and its associated rhymes. Some of the types of cakes are not necessarily real; for example, oat cakes for horses, and others. However, I am definitely NOT an expert authority on every type of cake made by every culture, so for all I know they may indeed be real cakes I have just never heard of!

This is a cute story. Jake is certainly an imaginative baker! After reading this story to a child, it might be fun to see if the child can think up other types of cakes for special purposes, consistent with the story. This story has nothing objectionable in it, and is appropriate for all ages of pre-readers and early readers. I have no qualms about recommending this one for youngsters on your shopping list.

I downloaded this illustrated eBook last night to read to my son and daughter, who are 2 and 4 years old. They loved it, and as soon as we were done, we had to go back to the beginning and read it again! This morning, the first words out of my daughter's mouth when she woke up were "Jake Bakes Cakes" and we've already gone through the story again 3 times today!

From a parent's perspective, the messages are delivered well in cute rhymes and the illustrations are terrific. We read a ton of children's books, and rarely do the kiddos demand a repeat immediately...so I know this one is a winner. Bravo!

This is a cute book about the different types of cakes Jake makes for a variety of people. The poem rhymes well and has a great rhythm. The illustrations are bright, colorful and full of character, while the illustrative style is a bit simplistic for my tastes, I doubt a toddler would care when he sees a witch flying on a broom with her cat at her back and both of them eating some pumpkin cake. At 34 pages it is long enough to get a wide variety of cakes and interesting characters. So indulge, get same milk and cake and peak through Jake's catalog of cakes.

My three-year-old daughter ADORES this book. She has been asking me for it every night at bedtime for a week or so (we normally read 2 or 3 kindle books on the phone together at night before bed). The illustrations are very well done, the rhyming text is cute. The only reason I'm subtracting a star is because it does include: pixies, witches, ghosts, and Santa - none of whom we like to emphasize in our home.

If not for those this book would be awesome, and it is definitely one of her favorites. She thinks Jake is super-silly.

My 6 yr old daughter and I had a blast reading this book. We made a game using it and the rhyming the author uses in each page. We would read one page (2 pgs rhyme with each other) and then we would guess a rhyming sentence that would go with the sentence we just read before turning the page. (Talking about prediction, practicing our sentence making and rhyming). We giggled the whole way and gave each other high fives when we got it right.
