this is musical and literary art. there is no other way to describe it. each track is a tiny masterpiece and Jake Thackray's performances are genuinely remarkable on each.

and that's the whole review. you've either heard this man and appreciated his brilliant talent or you haven't. there is no way to do justice to him in 1000 words so 66 will have to do.

Jake Thackray is an amazing artist who is very little known in America. Every song is a little world of its own, created by his subtle guitar, his beautiful expressive baritone, his exquisite and exuberant mastery of the English language with particularly delicious Yorkshire twists, his broad and nuanced understanding of human experience.... Jake died in 2002. There will never be another like him.

The late lamented Jake Thackray isn't entirely unsung, but he's far too little sung -- and this is the ultimate collection, 4 discs including all the material on his studio LPs plus a discful of early solo recordings that's the best of the lot, currently available on Amazon at a real bargain price. Imagine a cross between Jacques Brel and Tom Lehrer, with the verbal sophistication of Noel Coward and the no-nonsense North Country outlook of John Lennon. OK, is your mind blown yet? His songs are folksy, complex, and often a verse or two too long -- but if you have the taste, some of the most hilarious and heartbreaking songs you'll ever hear. If I start getting into details about specific songs -- the side-splitting sex farces, the ball-busting ballads -- I'll be writing all night. Instead, just check out some of the lyrics & clips on his memorial website [...], and if you feel the pull of his unique voice, superb craftsmanship, hilarious humanity and kindred spirit.... buy this set! You'll thank me. (Well, you probably won't -- but you should!)
