5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT FROM TRACK 1 TO TRACK 14 April 9, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
You would be hard pressed to find any song on this collection that doesn't please the ears. Each song weaves a landscape from familiar sounds of the past with a modern thread of brilliant music craftsmanship that has been absent from music for a very long time.

I really enjoy that the songs flip back and forth from calmer to more upbeat bringing a greater feel of variety amongst the collection. It is noted that this guy is only 19 years old which brings even more of a marvel to the songwriting and intensity behind the emotions with each song.

My personal highlights on the cd are Two Fingers, Simple as This, Country Song and Note To Self. I honestly give every single song a 5 star rating...aside from Ballad Of Mr Jones which I'd give a 3. There are other songs I found on You Tube which I'm disappointed didn't make it to cd release as of yet. "It's True", "Something's Wrong" and "Saffron".

I can't remember the last time I've been THIS enthusiastic over a new artist. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who likes good songwriting with good lyrics and infectious melodies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Up and coming... December 17, 2012
Verified Purchase
CD by Jake Bugg is a pleasant experience into the music coming out of the UK. Good sound and pithy lyrics make this CD a treat. Very pleased with the number of songs...not a skimpy offering like you see in some more established musicians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh and unique with unexpected maturity July 25, 2013
By Mike G
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I first saw Jake Bugg perform "Broken" on the Graham Norton Show recently and, at first, expected more of the same thing I've heard from a slew of young, cookie-cutter artists. (Was I thinking "Bieber?" Oh yes I was.) Then the voice got my attention, so I knew this would be different. Shortly, with his passionate performance of his lyrics, I knew this young guy had a maturity that would indeed bring up the thought of young Bob Dylan. Norton, in his post-performance interview expressed how surprised he was, saying that when Bugg sang, he was a MAN. Then he continued with, "but you're a BOY." Awkward, perhaps, but exactly what I was thinking.

I'm likely a jaded baby boomer that feels we had the best. Every generation will probably think the same of their own music. I maintain a constant, open-minded search for fresh and new. So when I compare him to Dylan, I don't mean he's "another Dylan." Bugg is BUGG. I simply mean that he's got the complexity and unique personal style that makes me think he's worthy of comparison. I expect this singer to go places.

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb Debut from the British Singer/Songwriter April 25, 2013
Format:Audio CD
19-year old British singer/songwriter Jake Bugg hearkens back to the past on his debut Jake Bugg released via Mercury. Recently released in the U.S, Bugg's released materialized in his native Britain back in October 2012, when he was only 18. Transcendent beyond his years, Bugg is the antithesis to his British pop contemporaries (One Direction, The Wanted). Bugg's base is 50's and 60s rock, influenced by folk, garage, and traditional, organic sounds. Eschewing synthesizers and programming, Bugg and his fellow musicians opt for acoustic and electric guitars, bass, and acoustic drums.

"Lightening Bolt" starts the effort off brilliantly, uptempo and highly energetic in its approach. Brief it may be, the single packs a mighty, reminiscent punch (it is currently featured on a Gatorade commercial). Equally great is the addictive "Two Fingers", a cut where Bugg pleases with memorable lyrics "I drink to remember, I smoke to forget..." later affirming his gratitude to move on from the past ("So I kiss goodbye to every little ounce of pain / Light a cigarette and wish the world away / I got out, I got out, out alive / and I'm here to stay / So I hold two fingers up to yesterday / light a cigarette and smoke it all away / I got out, I got out, out alive / and I'm here to stay"). On "Taste It", the tempo remains quick, with the youngster delivering another compelling chorus against classic rock and roll production: "I can taste it / in my mouth it's just so bittersweet / it's right there in your eyes of apple green / it should be easy but it's hard to leave."

On "Seen It All", Bugg paints a moving portrait of the 'ills' of life (violence specifically), summing up that "..

4.0 out of 5 stars IMPRESSIVE DEBUT April 30, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Came across this name a few times, sounded like my thing so I gave it a listen. The first song hooked me in as quickly as Adele's 'Rolling In the Deep' which I heard before it's release and was electrified by (as was every one else). Opener 'Lightning Bolt' is my favorite track but there are many other very good ones. The last part of the album slows down and is more produced but still good (and may grow on me further). Hell for an 18yo this is incredible! Most lyrics are original and show a maturity beyond his years.I won't try to compare him to others as he is a distinctive artist but if you enjoy singer songwriters, Dylan, Ryan Adams, mid 60's garage style music and like things fairly lo-fi,roots based and clattery though with a melodic sense this dude may just add something very positive to your listening. Should be an interesting career ahead as long as he keeps some of the products he sings about under control!
