Review

Jake Maxwell, owner of the Lazy T Ranch, returned from the Civil War to find farmers settling on land his family had occupied for twenty years. There was little he could do about it since he didn't own the land. But now the farmers are coming to him and demanding payment for damages caused by his cows. He stands to lose his ranch if he doesn't get his herd to market. The only problem is, he doesn't have any cowhands to help him. Isabelle Davenport is determined to find homes for the ragtag bunch of orphans under her care. But when she finds out that the farmers who have agreed to take the boys in intend to treat them no better than slaves, Isabelle knows she has to find some other solution. When Jake offers his help, Isabelle can hardly refuse. Making a group of boys into cowhands and Isabelle into a trail cook seems like more trouble than it's worth. But Jake wants to keep his ranch and Isabelle wants to find homes for the boys. Along the way they find out that a lady from Georgia, a cowboy from Texas and a motley crew of boys can become a family. Jake begins an exciting new series from Leigh Greenwood called The Cowboys. Jake is a rough-around-the-edges hero while Isabelle is the perfect lady in all respects. Of course, this doesn't stop them from falling in love. The boys in Isabelle's care add humor and warmth to the story (and the hope that they will each get their own book!). Leigh Greenwood fans will be thrilled to know that there will be at least two more books in the series-Ward and Buck. If the popularity of the Seven Brides series is any indication, The Cowboys is sure to be a long and wonderful collection of stories! Leigh Greenwood continues to delight readers with wonderful western romances! Fun, entertaining and romantic! Jake is special-- I can't wait for Ward's story! Leigh Greenwood's talent for creating memorable and authentic characters is unsurpassed! A book by Leigh Greenwood is always a keeper! Kristina Wright -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. 5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Fantastic!!!!!, August 25, 1997
By A Customer
Leigh Greenwood has done it again. I would of given a 10, but I have to wait a whole year to read about the next cowboy. I loved Ward because Greenwood brings back All of Jakes brew and throws twins Montey & Hen Randolph in for flavor. Ward you just have to love even though you want to kick him into Montana and back. Then you want to do the same to Mariea. Ward is a must read!!

This review is from: Jake (The Cowboys) (Paperback)
After reading the Seven Bride's series by this author, I was anxious to read another book by Leigh Greenwood. The Coyboys series was just the thing! Jake is a great book. Wonderful characters that leave me only wanting to read more. These romance books are so good, it is hard to believe that the author is a man!

4.0 out of 5 stars Jake is fantastic!, March 13, 2010

CORTEGA (The Great North) - See all my reviews
This is a good story about a loner rancher whose life is taken over by Isabelle, a young woman trying to place several orphans in good homes. She discovers that the farmers who had agreed to take the young boys were nothing more than slave drivers, and so she clearly has to change her plans. Jake has a bunch of cattle that he needs to get to market, but he has no money or crew to accomplish that. He quickly sees that the orphans and he can make a good team if Isabelle will allow him to train them to be cowboys. She agrees the older ones can go with him, but not the young ones. However, circumstances dictate that all the orphans, including Isabelle must join Jake's drive to market. It is during the drive that Jake and Isabelle fall in love, that the orphans learn self-worth, teamwork, and that there are people in the world willing to love them and protect them -- Jake and Isabelle.

It is a good story, with each character vibrant and you are rooting for all of them to wind up together. Recommended!
