This album strikes up fires from the early jestation of music through it's worlds variations, swirling in it's american traditon of swinging it's butt off. Jaki is a master arranger with a pen or a piano. The band funnels through his lifeforce that continually leaves me breathtaken. Listen for his vocal interplay. As if you could possibly miss it. They had fun at this little club off rt. 1, and history was made. As musical boundaries were eroded through unabashed expression.

This continues to be one of my favorite recordings EVER! Any jazz listener should include this in his collection. My favorite track: Broadway. Lineup: JB on piano, George Tucker on bass, Joe Farrell on tenor sax and drums, Alan Dawson on drums and vibes. There is also a volume 2 out there, but it's hard to find.

I have loved Byard's work with Mingus, but had never heard his stuff as a bandleader. There are two recordings of this date from 1965, this album, and The Last from Lennie's. This night just crackled with energy. Byard does things with his piano that I don't hear anyone else do. Joe Farrell is a dynamo of the saxophone. I don't know why he isn't more revered. The rhythm section here of George Tucker and Alan Dawson plays with such perfection I am reminded of the seemingly psychic connection Bill Evans had with his great Trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian.

A shame they are apparently out of print. Well worth tracking down, especially for fans of post bop and Mingus.

This a combination of the Vols 1 & 2 LPs with the exception of Jaki Byard's Ballad Medley (which isn't played in ballad tempo at all) This track which wasn't included because of CD time limitations is included with previously unissued tracks on THE LAST FROM LENNIE'S ---- Denise is a Jaki Byard trio track - Cathy is Joe Farrells' ballad feature. Joe smokes it on Broadway and plays flute on Bass Ment Blues - 2 tracks feature Alan Dawson on vibes with Farrell on drums. Joe only plays soprano sax on the out chorus of Twelve.
