4.0 out of 5 stars Decent copy of the arcade original, but NOT a direct port!
I assume anyone reading these reviews is a fan of Mortal Kombat and wants to know how accurate this plug-n-play version is to the 90's arcade hit. XBox and PlayStation 2 owners already have an option to have an arcade perfect version of Mortal Kombat with the Deception Kollectors Edition. So this would only interest those who don't have either of those platforms.

I assume anyone reading these reviews is a fan of Mortal Kombat and wants to know how accurate this plug-n-play version is to the 90's arcade hit. I decide to help you out as I OWNED a coin-op Mortal Kombat I and II machine in 1996 and spent many hours in front of them. Well as far as this TV Games version goes, the characters are a nice size (bigger than the SNES or Genesis versions but a tad smaller than the arcade), the sound samples are mostly there as are the backgrounds and characters (including Reptile). A few of the animated details are missing (clapping Monks, animated torches, character bio animations, Shang Tsung moving his head while watching the fights) but visually this is a decent looking game for 20 bucks. The controls are responsive and the game PLAYS exactly like the arcade original (the most important part). It's REALLY close to arcade perfect, but falls a little short here and there. I truly believe they could have made this a 100% perfect arcade conversion had they taken a few more weeks developing it. For true fans, this is a nice way to get your Kombat on without spending a lot of cash. I was happy with it and like I said, I am a Mortal Kombat snob having owned 2 of the arcade games in '96. Just waiting for a TV Games version of Mortal Kombat 2 now. THAT would consume a lot of my time!

4.0 out of 5 stars This Game's Awesome, May 26, 2005
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mortal Kombat TV games (Video Game)
This new version of Mortal Kombat by Midway is a great arcade-style game for both experienced gamers and novices alike. I can still choose from popular fighters like Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Raiden, Sonya Blade, Kano, Scorpion, or Sub-Zero. Each player has his/her own special moves. My favorite is Scorpion. He could teleport and fire a harpoon out of his hand. All the fighters have universal moves like the low kick, high punch, or the jump kick. There is also the "Test Your Might" challenge in which a fighter could earn bonus points, a "secret" duel with the Reptile, a chance to battle the gigantic Goro, and a final showdown with the mysterious Shang Tsung for the title of Supreme Mortal Kombat Warrior. This is a great game with excellent graphics, cool sound effects, and memorable characters from the classic tradition of Mortal Kombat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars Out Of Five!, April 22, 2005
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mortal Kombat TV games (Video Game)
This version of Mortal Kombat by Midway is a great classic arcade-style game for both experienced gamers and novices alike. Fighters ranging from the charismatic Liu Kang to the deadly Sub-Zero to the all-powerful Raiden are pit one-on-one in an ancient competition called the Shaolin Tournament. Not only must each fighter battle for their own honor but also for the fate of the world.

The gamer must choose from seven different fighters to fight a player chosen by the computer or to battle with a second gamer using the included cord. Each fighter has his/her own special moves. Liu Kang is an excellent choice for beginners because of his easy maneuverability. More experienced gamers should pick more complex characters like Kano or Scorpion. My favorite is Raiden for his flying thunderbolt and teleportation. There are also excellent "finishing moves." For example, Scorpion can rip the spinal chord out of an opponent. Others can throw their beaten opponents down a pit of spikes. Lastly, the game has very cool sound effects. Fighters yell out phrases like "Finish Him!" or "Get Back Here!"

As the gamer gains experience, there are higher stages of battles. There is the "Test Your Might" challenge where an opponent can earn bonus points by breaking a stack of wood. On the fourth stage, a fighter will be given a chance to battle the Reptile which is a combination of both Sub-Zero and Scorpion. In further stages, a fighter will be given the chance to battle Goro and the demon Shang Tsung for the title of Supreme Mortal Kombat warrior. The game can be played without any other operating system. All you need is a t.v. that has an audio in and video in ports. This is a great game with excellent graphics, cool sound effects, and memorable characters from the classic tradition of Mortal Kombat. I would give it five stars out of five.

XBox and PlayStation 2 owners already have an option to have an arcade perfect version of Mortal Kombat with the Deception Kollectors Edition. So this would only interest those who don't have either of those platforms.

This plug and play is far from arcade perfect. The music is simple midi file shadows of what was in the original. A lot of things are missing: character shadows, the blinking eyes from Goro's layer and the clapping audience in the couryard level. There have been some obvious shortcuts to squeeze this into a plug and play version. All that plus the fact that the harsh ridging on the play pad with wear away your thumb before too long, I really couldn't score this game too high on the overall rating.

However, having only had the censored version for the Super Nintendo for so long, and not wanting to buy a whole new game console just for an arcade perfect Mortal Kombat, this does come in a close second. All of the characters are there with all of the moves. The difficulty setting is set right so you won't get bored with it nor will you get overly frustrated. If you don't have an X-box or Playstation with the possibility of arcade perfection, this is a nice settlement and worth the price.

Amazon questions...
How much fun is this toy? Really fun.
How would you rate this toys educational value? Very educational! I never knew that lightning could make someones head explode, or that it was possible to punch someone so hard you could remove their heart!
How durable is this toy? I bought this a while back and it still works fine. The batteries (4 AAs) actually last pretty long too.
Growing up during the Mortal Kombat "boom" (with all the censored versions) this was a dream come true!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, May 25, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

This game is pretty awesome. It totally brings back memories of playing the old mortal kombat games, but this time it's a lot easier to control and the moves are a lot easier to perform. However, the game play is a little harder then what I remember. I might be wrong though because I was also getting my butt kicked by my little brother who I also bought one for. That's right its also a two player game. Other then that this is a great pick up, I couldn't stop playing this game, its just as addictive as the old ones.

I love this game! I bought two so I could battle it out with my brother and it's great! I felt like I was playing it 10 yrs ago again. The graphics are classic, I could do all the same finishing moves... it's just awesome.

The game plays itself out just like the original. I chose Raiden cause he was my fave back then & still is. The booklet that comes w/ the game is stocked full of finishing moves, and tricks for each fighter. I love these plug it in & play games...they're a good crowd pleaser at parties. Two thumbs up from me!

Recently, I ordered this game. It was big fun, but after playing against the computer for a while, I was ready for the next level: playing against my buddies through the special cable that connects two of these games. It is so much fun! And it save tons of coins at the arcades!

Mortal Kombat is one the best games out there, now you can take it anywhere just about. Takes me back to the good times. Controls handle well, you can do a fatality on someone easily, and when you go to turn it on... boom its right there, and ready to play, it doesn't mess around, pick your guy and your good to go. The only thing that I remember is that on the Saga version in the background the crowed applauded when you won a round and so did Shang Tsung, but that was forgivable. Five stars from me on this one. Now if only they start on MK2.
