This has to be one of the most original bands in existance. Here you have Black Metal that is influenced by Polka. Now I know what you're thinking, "What a terrible mix!" When I first told my father about this band, he said to me, "Man, they'll market anything nowadays", but after he heard it, he was blown away! Take my advice and lay all skeptics aside. When you...

2.0 out of 5 stars Bwahh ha ha ha hah ahaaaaa! Does comedy belong in metal?
C'mon now! Black polka metal? Oh lord this is so Spinal Tap it's not even funny, except it is funny. Hilarious in fact, but I'm not quite sure that was the intention of the band. To their credit Fintroll is some of the silliest metal I've ever heard and I've heard a lot of silly metal. To make the experience complete don't forget your accordion (which they use on several...

When you actually hear this stuff, you can't help but have a smile on your face. It's that good. These guys are pros when it comes to meshing the two genres. What better genre to mesh with metal than Polka? Very impressive.

Another thing that impresses me with Fintroll is their ability to write good songs. To me there are a lot of bands out there, especially Black Metal bands, with good musicianship but the inability to write a good song if it killed them. You find nothing of the sort with Fintroll. Not only is this some of the catchiest metal, but it's also chock full of wonderful musicianship. You'll find layers and layers of memorable melodies. If you're into metal and are interested in seeing how far it can be taken, give this one a try!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly not poop, November 25, 2004
This review is from: Jaktens Tid (Audio CD)
Finntroll is musically and thematically brilliant, a sort of soundtrack for a dark forest. If you don't like polka with your metal, don't buy it. If you like amazing, pure folk-metal, dark soundscapes and great musicianship, order it immediately. Don't listen to the review below (or above, I have no idea). Anyway, a brilliant mix of traditional finnish folk and metal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aaargh, Matey, Aaargh!, March 3, 2005

This is a surprisingly fun album. Can't understand a word they are singing but then again, I never listen to the lyrics anyway. Let's just say their "articulated vocal noises" are right on the mark. They are such a unique blend of death metal and Finnish humpaa (?) music and it somehow works. And, it works very well. I picture lots of partying trolls, dwarves, whatever all having a good time singing, drinking, grunting and mumbling up a storm. It also reminds me of a bunch of non-English speaking pirates on a drinking binge, hence the title of this review. Quite well done and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Insane., June 18, 2006

I'm sure you know by now, Finntroll adds massive Pokla elements to Black Metal. The thing is, IT WORKS. Extremely well.

I've had this album for about two years and for some reason in the last couple months it has grown on me a lot and became quite addicting. The songs are quite catchy and well... danceable, containing very upbeat rhythms and accordions quite often and sometimes calmer Viking-style brass instruments and keyboards. This is all in addition to crushingly heavy guitars and aggressive growling vocals (in... Swedish). If the melodies aren't polka, then they're more of a Viking-metal or folk-metal sort of feeling.

It is not quite as silly as most people think, although there are a few parts that are silly such as the second part of the last track, "Tomhet Och Tystnad Härska" which is some kind of Finnish drinking song played in a folk style with banjos, hefty trumpets and drunken slurring. Also the "backing vocals" in the title track are some form of totally wacky/drunken chanting, and there's a few bits and pieces of crazy vocals like that scattered around.

"Krig" is a short intro to gradually unleash the chaos, containing pounding drums and deep brass instruments over ambient keyboards. It continues right into the next song "Fodosagan" which begins with a deep piano melody and seems like a relatively normal black metal song until it breaks down and emphasizes the wild accordion melody, then goes into a slightly calmer section with acoustic guitars.

"Slaget Vid Blodsalv" is quite possibly the best song, it immediately starts with a hyper-paced accordion melody right along with heavy guitars; the clash of these two genres is just so ridiculously wild. The drumming in this song is excellent. "Bakom Varje Fura" is a short symphonic arrangement and a break between the chaos, it almost sounds like music from a kid's animated movie or something, but it is honestly really good.

So far I have this album and Nattfodd, and it is really hard to determine which one I like better. So if you like one you'll definitely like the other. And If you haven't heard Finntroll at all yet, you'll love it if you're craving some metal that adds fun and craziness to the chaos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre, but truly excellent, nonetheless, August 2, 2006

Finntroll are one of the most bizarre metal bands in the genre today. Their musical qualities are pure talent, and no one is going to argue the fact that Finntroll are quite 'serious' in their music making ability. Jaktens Tid was Finntroll's first release with Century Media records in 2001. The band has incorporated the use of accordians, flutes, and other folk instruments to play a style of 'humpa' simply known as Troll Metal.

Jaktens Tid has one of my favorite instrumental intro's with 'Krig.' Every time that I hear this, I have colorful thoughts that I am in a viking war ship ready to meet my northern brethren in battle. 'Fodosagan' is possibly the best song present on the album. The keyboard notes blend nicely with guitar riffs and death growls. The accordians sound funny at first, but they really do make the music enjoyable. The title track (Jaktens Tid) starts with a great vocal melodies and is very addicting all around. 'Aldhissla' is one of my favorite songs because of the vocals in the beginning and folk drums, only for the guitars to come on and growls crushing you with wonderful metal.

Finntroll may be one of metal's most bizarre bands, but they are another talented group to come out of Finland. Skrymer and Routa have done a terrific job on the guitars, and Trollhorn is masterful on the keyboards. Finntroll's latest release 'Nattfödd,' is just as good as Jaktens Tid. Both albums are fun, full of folk melody, and plain metal fun. This album is highly recommended to fans of viking, folk, and troll metal. Finntroll's music is very excellent and fun to listen to. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Black metal and polka?!, December 11, 2002

I can already sense your outrage... "Whaddya mean, black metal and polka?!" Yes, polka and metal are not the likeliest of combinations, but I can say without a doubt that this is one of the most fun metal albums I've ever heard. These crazy Finnish trolls have whipped up some of the most addicting and catchy black metal out there, and unlike most of the grim and humorless black metal bands in the metal scene, these guys seem like they're actually having fun making the music. I mean, the whole band started as a drunken side-project! The whole sound of the band is a fusion of a scathing black metal-based guitar assault mixed with the Finnish version of the polka, played by keyboard wizard aptly named, er, Trollhorn. See, I told you these guys have a sense of humor! Never mind the fact that I can't understand a single word on the album, because the music more than makes up for it. The first time I heard Trollhorn bashing out the Finnish polka music, I started laughing hysterically. I couldn't help it! To hear a metal band playing cheery polka melodies is simply hilarious. Hilarious in an amazingly refreshing way, as this whole album deviates from the traditional no-nonsense black metal approach. The raspy vocals are present, of course, which may or may not be your cup of tea. The dual guitar assault doesn't provide twin guitar melodies, but instead produces a gritty and heavy sound to satisfy the tr00est black metal fan. The drummer B.Dominator is extremely talented in my opinion, executing dazzling rolls and other fantastic drum trickery. The grandiose yet goofy keyboards of Trollhorn is what makes Finntroll really shine, though. Whenever you hear his bouncy humppa (Finnish polka) melodies, you will smile or perhaps chuckle. I have no idea what the lyrics are about, but I've heard the lyrical topics range from getting drunk to goblins and trolls eating Christians. Not your typical angry Satanic curses spouted by most black metal bands. Jaktens Tid is like nothing you've ever heard, and blows most of the traditional black metal scene away.

If you're looking for metal that's tons of fun, you need to check out these crazy Finntrolls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, and original, April 8, 2006

I really like this album.
By a Finnish folk metal band called 'Finntroll,' they combine metal with harsh vocals, with a lot of folk, Finnish 'humppa' influence. No, this is not Death metal, its folk metal with harsh vocals. And, its done really well too. The vocals are crisp and nice, there is a lot of melody in this, and not something you'll only listen to once, a lot of 'replay' value.

The songs are very cool, full of energy and power, and really fun to listen to. I found that in some other Finntroll albums like Nattfodd the songs can be a bit repetative and not that interesting but that definitely isn't the case with Jaktens Tid, really cool songs, a cool performance, good instrumentation, what else is there to ask for?

5/5

I've been a metal fan for some time now, but listening to Finntroll's Jaktens Tid simply changed my way of seeing things... Some of the most remarkable songs on this masterpiece are Jaktens Tid, Slaget Vid Blodsälv, Skogens Hämnd, VargTimmen and Den Hornkronte Konungen. Wilska's voice is powerful, rough (kinda black metal, sung in Finnsvėnska), TrollHorn's keyboards give Finntroll the Humppa folk style and Beast Dominator's drums are truly energetic... Indeed a masterpiece, I would recommend it to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete surprise!, July 14, 2004
This review is from: Jaktens Tid (Audio CD)
Finnish musicians who play death metal-polka and sing about trolls...sound like a recipe for disaster? Hell yes!

But nope, Finntroll are actually one of the best Finnish bands out there. This album is surprisingly good and is quite refreshing. Finntroll prove you can have fun and parody yourself while actually being extremely talented, original musicians.

Highly recommended for fans of extreme metal who don't take themselves too seriously.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best album... EV-OR!, July 14, 2004
This review is from: Jaktens Tid (Audio CD)
This is quite possibly the best album I have ever bought, I don't think english can describe how awesome it is, but I will try. It's music that you could play during a Viking battle, and in fact, (test this yourself), it syncs up to Lord of The Rings The Two Towers. This album has gotten me through some tough times too, whenever I get sad, I blast it in my room for untold amounts of time, and prolonged exposure to Finntroll WILL make you want to hit stuff with a Mace. In summary, its like Viking, Troll, Death Laser, and an epic Star Wars style space battle music all on the same album(...)
