Editorial Reviews

Review

“Delightful . . . written by a woman who values food, family and friends.” —Shelf Awareness

Jam Today, whose title is culled from a line in one of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland books, isn’t so much a cookbook as it is ruminations on food preparation and living right.” —Cascadia Weekly

“Tod Davies takes a physicist's approach to social change . . . like the minds behind a particle accelerator, her primary goal is to cause collisions.” —Portland Mercury

“Davies’s creative joy in food and the world around her is infectious.” —Bookslut

Jam Today is just my kind of book—one of those rare trackings of the healthy human animal rustling about the kitchen then settling in at the table. In addition to some great meals made to satisfy desires, needs, whims or simply to make use of what’s at hand, Jam Today is a complete pleasure to read.”—DEBORAH MADISON , author of Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone and Vegetable Literacy

“The spirit of M.F.K. Fisher surely hovers over this book, amused and beguiled by a cook whose prose has the same artful composure, and whose cooking possesses a similar innate sense of style. I believe that good cooks are born, not made—but steep your culinary self long enough in the pages of Jam Today and it might just be born again.” —JOHN THORNE, author of Serious Pig: An American Cook in Search of His Roots and Mouth Wide Open: A Cook and His Appetite

About the Author

Tod Davies has been a screenwriter, film producer, radio food show host, and independent publisher. She thinks if you want the world to be a better place, you should start by making sure everyone around you is well fedand then work from there. She lives in Oxford and the mountains of Oregon with her husband and two dogs. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

TOD DAVIES is the author of Jam Today: A Diary of Cooking With What You've Got, and Snotty Saves the Day: The History of Arcadia. Inspired by the work she did with teenagers in England, Snotty Saves the Day is her first book of fiction. Unsurprisingly, her attitude toward literature is the same as her attitude toward cooking--it's all about working with what you have to find new ways of looking and new ways of being, and in doing so, to rediscover the best of our humanity and work toward a better world. Davies now lives with her husband Alex, and her two dogs, in the alpine valley of Colestin, Oregon, surrounded by a mountain forest where the manuscript of Snotty Saves the Day was discovered under an old fir tree in the snow.

Sometimes one needs to improvise to get things done. "Jam Today: A Diary of Cooking with What You've Got" is a blend of cookbook and memoir, about going to the cabinet and cooking with whatever one can find in there (instead of preplanning ingredients and other aspects). With no recipes, author Tod Davies comes to readers with a more practical approach to cooking for those who don't plan their meals weeks in advance. "Jam Today" is recommended reading for any who cook on their whim instead of reading a recipe.

What a breath of fresh air! A cookbook that is not didactic but encouraging, not precise measurements but gentle observations of meals the author has prepared and the philosophy behind the choices she made. It is like sitting in the kitchen of a good friend sipping tea while you discuss the matters of the day.

I too am a cookbook reader but Ms. Davies takes this activity to anothe level beyond the usual list of ingredients and instructions to possibilities and passions. Reading this book makrd me think I can join her in preparing sumptios meals for my aself and my loved ones. .

Lovely book, warm and easy and just right for cozy rrading. The food is not my favourite kind, mostly vegetarian with loads and loads of cheese, but it doesn't matter. This is all about the author's voice and a serene approach to cooking and eating.

I am amazed at how much this book has helped me become a better and calmer cook. Davies advocates using what you have to make your meals. How creative is that! And it is astonishing how much easier it seems to prepare supper when the pressure is off to reproduce something from a gourmet cookbook.
