Editorial Reviews

Features: Putumayo visits Jamaica, the homeland of reggae music and mythical artists such as Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru and Toots & the Maytals. With roots in African tradition and influences from American Rhythm & Blues, Motown, soul and other popular music styles, reggae has taken the world by storm with its irresistible beat and powerful messages. Jamaica celebrates the joy of reggae with this collection of classic and new tracks by some of reggae's greatest voices. One of the most popular and influential music forms of the 20th century, reggae has traveled the world spreading its message of social and spiritual awareness. Reggae's popularity comes partially from its image and the power of its lyrics; but at its heart it is good time music, with a laid-back, funky beat that keeps your feet moving and your head bobbing. Reggae has traveled the world and found proponents in

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful June 1, 2001
Format:Audio CD
This entire album will have you on your feet dancing to the infectious beat of reggae. This is reggae at it's best, from Toots and the Maytals to Peter Tosh every song is terrific. It is impossible to pick a favourite, the whole album is one that you can play over and over. Unfortunately, due to licensing difficulties, Putumayo were unable to include a track by Bob Marley, but there are enough great artists on here to more than make up for that. Culture's "Why am I a Rastaman", Black Uhuru's "Sponji reggae" and Jimmy Cliff's "Give the people what they want", to name but three. If you are anything of a reggae fan, then this album belongs in your collection. 20 page booklet includes photos and information on each artist. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you LOVE world beat music, buy it May 17, 2006
Format:Audio CD
I strongly disagree with the reviewer who bought it in Boston and hates it because all they like is Bob Marley. I love Bob Marley, but his music is not all there is to World Beat and it's not all there is to Jamaican Music. I have over 12 Putamayo CDs and love them - this one included - and many different Reggae CDs - Marley included. One of the cool things about the Putamayo CDs is that they provide exposure to a wide variety of artists and musical styles that the listener may not otherwise have experienced. If you have an open mind and want to experience different styles of world beat music, buy this and other Putamayo CDs and broaden your horizons!

5.0 out of 5 stars Top notch Reggae! March 25, 2007
By DC
Format:Audio CD
If u can't get into Agustus Pablo, Grammy award winner Black Uhuru(the best selling reggae group ever!) Culture, Jimmy Cliff, Israel Vibrations, all legends of the genre, you have no business calling yourself a reggae fan, and furthermore should't even bother listening. This cd has played a major part in my musical world. I am now a Reggae promoter, I spend alot of my time going to shows and listening to all kinds of reggae, and I can honestly say that the songs on this disc all had a part in my career choice! If you love reggae, if you are curious about reggae, if you like island rythyms, or latin flavor, or good music in general, buy this CD! Some idiot payed to much in Boston, but you can get it here on Amazon for a great price, and trust me it's worth it!
