Jamaica is such a beautiful place. This book caught my interest because I am into healing my whole body naturally. Little did I know Jamaica offers so many herbs to help get rid of illness. If you are health conscious, it's a must read. I give this book two thumbs up. And it's an easy read.

It is quite surprising that so little has been written about Jamaica's tradition of botanical medicine. While most of the islands of the English-speaking Caribbean have venerable and very sophisticated herbal lineages, Jamaica's is especially interesting as it constitutes the convergence-point of a variety of traditions: the European, the African, the native American, the East Indian and the Chinese. A mere three of four volumes have been published in the English language and those have not been recent publications.

The "Official Dictionary of Jamaican Herbs and Medicinal Plants and Their Uses" is a small work, but not too small to be extremely useful to anyone interested in herbalism as it is practiced on this unique island: in some ways the most cosmopolitan and in other ways the most traditional of all the West Indies. As Jamaica expands its reach into the world, and the interest in its culture and history and literature, its music and its spirituality grows, the greater demand there has been for a titles that provide an insight into Jamaica's everyday lifestyle. This book takes a brief look at some of the herbs and medicinal plants found in Jamaica, an island awash with ancient herbal remedies to a number of common ailments, along with advice on how these herbs should be used. It also explores some of the myths and legends associated with these herbs and plants.

This is a convenient, easily-used guide for those who are interested in the herbalism and folk medicine of Jamaica. My only issue with it is its brevity. It is to be hoped that perhaps it will inspire larger works on this fascinating subject, a tradition of botanical medicine as deep as it is broad.
