Jamaican visionary,

This review is from: Jamaican E.T. (Audio CD)
Lee "Sratch" Perry is a living legend and when genius beckons you should take note. If you are familiar with some of his old stuff than you will be pleased to see the master of the controls, twisting and turning the boards and tweeking his sound is putting out some pretty spacey vibes. I guess the name of the disc suggests his otherworldliness. He composes all the music and adds his haunting vocals for an original sound. His multi-layered vocals must be like all the little creative voices in his head. This guy is really out there but if you are so inclined, on occasion, I would really suggest listening to one of the most bizarre , gritty and creative artists Jamaica has produced. At times he sounds like Mr. Marley, the influence is undeniable but it is reciprocal as well. The multi-layered tracks are mind blowing. The master of dub creates some tracks that are some of his best in years. Play this disc over a 5.1 sound systen or with high quality headphones on and you'll be trip'n. Who needs drugs when there is music like Perry's that is a mind escape-sound-escapade. The influence of his music is everywhere. Everyone from Sublime, U-Roy and Bob Marley has been influenced by his vibe. All the tracks are very cool. Some highlights are "Holyness, Righteousness, Light" and "Ten Commnadments" which have a fervent sound that reminds me of Bob Marley's voice on "Runing Away." The use of background vocals , similar to the I-Threes but in more of a Southern- gospel-soulful-style is very imaginative. If you like reggae and want to hear something totally different than check this out. Lee" Scratch" Perry is an original worthy of your time. Sit yourself down under a palm tree and listen to the man blow your mind; maybe his is blown but his genius still comes through as an original. Recommended for people with adventureous musical tastes willing to listen to one of the most experimental innovators alive.

best in a long time,
This review is from: Jamaican E.T. (Audio CD)
I love Scratch. He has put out more classic reggae than anyone, including Bob Marley. But, lately I've found his studio work with Mad Professor harder and harder to enjoy. This album, coming as late in his career as it does, is a breath of fresh air. Lots of nice rhymes and rythms. A lot of fun. "We love you Mr. Perry" (ten commandments) is a new classic. Wow!

Thank You Scratch.....,

Okay, this new release from Scratch is haunting. If you're a fan of the Dub King and Black Ark you will not be disappointed. The world of reggae/dub (what's left of it) would be a pretty dull place without Sctatch....don't walk....run and buy this one.
