If you are exploring this cd because of the HBO show Treme and the marvellous theme song, I empathize--I was in the same boat. Based on snippets, I purchased Jambalaya and fell IN LOVE with John Boutte's soulful voice. It's a wonderful mix of ballads and more uptempo songs like "Two Bands Rolling" and "Treme Song." His version of "A Change is Gonna Come" drips sweet soul and doesn't make me long for Sam Cooke's original (which is the highest praise I can give).

But don't put him in a box; he also covers Annie Lennox's "Why" and revamps "Battle Hymn of the Republic", creating a delicious gospel gumbo. His "At the Foot of Canal Street" is more of a traditional blues song, though he co-wrote that, too.

I can not recommend this cd highly enough. If you love old soul, jazz, or N.O.-styled music, buy this, even if you're a relative novice to the latter genre, like I am. There's not a bad track on this album.

Can you imagine being born into a city where you are going to wake up of a morning to hear this sort of music, hear it all day, faint in the background and then sometimes pressing, and go to sleep, it still going on back there somewhere? someone like maybe Louis Armstrong said it's back where you could use to think you would hear old buddy bolden's horn in the 1890s? I remember that, not long ago like buddy Bolden and them, but long enough now. Now how you going to hear that and not be a different man or woman than if you were from somewhere else?

I love the old classical music, the old back and Mozart and all the great ones. Nobody is going to disrespect them, those men were giants on the earth. But there's just no way to talk about that hear, no, and no disrespect. Because this here something else. Maybe you going to come to this like my friends in New York did from that new tv show. Thats just fine and it is even great but it does not matter. Mr. Boutte, does it all on this record and he raises your soul to hear it.

You got to think back if you are getting old like me. Me, I thought we lost it all. I thought my city was gone and drowned which was once the place where 'american' music came from, but oh no, it's still there. It could be miles underwater and its still there. I am grown less sprightly and i hope you will not tell my people i wept with something at these tunes and i am very happy that Mister B got these down on wax. Let us hope that they got all of that new new levees and such right but even if they didnt, those guys, what makes me feel so gladly is that these young bloods just make that music just go on and on and on and on. I think that is something special and I thank the Lord for it. I wish I had higher words but I do not.

Okay, No need for me to write what I planned, because Diann Wilkes SAID IT ALL, almost word-for-word!!! She is 100% correct, so please see her review below. I would add that I had an important meeting the morning after I purchased this cd, and was up until about 1:30am listening to it, COULD NOT TURN IT OFF!!!! Okay, was dead tired for my meeting, but it was well worth it. I have played it about one hundred times since. EVERY SINGLE SONG IS GREAT IN IT'S OWN UNIQUE AND AMAZING WAY!!! John Boutte has brought deep emotion to the surface in a beautiful way. Thanks to HBO for Treme, or I would not have discovered this amazing artist!!! P.S. When you play Battle Hymn of the Republic get ready for a HUGE surprise of transition from a soft traditional beginning to get-on-your-feet celebration the rest of the way - WOW what a great gift that song is, along with all the others! Keep recording John Boutte - a new and permanent fan!!!

Discovered John Boutte in the series Treme. Whaere have they been hiding this beautiful singer? New Orleans has a treasure. My Lady and I got excited every time he was featured in the series. Then I found this disc, and I must say we were not disappointed. I like every thing. But I am much fond of 'Sisters', a really lovely song. And the full version of 'Treme' is exquisite. A highly recommended disc.

We were first introduced to Mr. Boutté through his work on the awesome HBO series, Tremé. The more we watched and listened to the music, the more we fell in love with the show, the music and the city of NOLA itself. The only reason I rated it 4 stars was due to a couple song choices I didn't feel blended with the flow of the rest of the CD. BTW, track 6 may have become my new favorite song and my Fiancé's choice for our first dance song when we marry. Enjoy the smooth sounds of Mr. Boutté.

Ok Ok, so like many I was a complete new orleans jazz idiot until the "Treme" came along.
John Boutte features in season one and two and his distinctive and soulful voice is one you simply cannot turn away from.
We bought this album after falling in love with Treme, the program and soundtrack.

John's voice is strong and powerful, the chosen tracks (clearly picked years before treme was a twinkle in the producers eye) are perfect for your first nawlin's jazz album, a great mix of tradition tunes, covers and jazz-lite numbers.

we loved it from the first play... battle hymn of the republic will make you want to take up arms, and muddy waters will make you want to by a plane ticket.

thanks John... glad your getting the attention you deserve.
