Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Whistler, best known in his lifetime for his controversial nocturnes, harmonies, and arrangements in paint, also created numerous pastels. Robert H. Getscher (art, John Carroll Univ.) has compiled a handsome collection of Whistler's pastels; the major focus is pastels executed in 1879-80 while Whistler was in Venice preparing for a London exhibit in 1881. Getscher's introduction briefly outlines Whistler's life and his unique approach to pastels as he developed and improved his skills. Extensive notes and commentary accompany 65 color images, many never before reproduced. Getscher's text is insightful, authoritative, and well documented; he includes reviews of the 1881 exhibit, thus providing insight into the critical environment of Whistler's time. This is a book for art lovers as well as scholars.

Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This book contains fine reproductions of Whistler's pastels that should be an inspiration to any pastel artist. Many are actual size. The facts about Whistler's life are very interesting as well.

Format: Hardcover
Quite a pleasurable experience to come upon a book, not only filled with color plates of Whistler pastels, but also informed by the commentary of an expert, Robert H. Getscher, who knows how to communicate with the lay public. While published more than twenty years ago, nothing is dated. Laymen, as well as the art aficionado, should find pleasure in these pages.
In the hands of our guide we follow Whistler from his early promise to his mature masterworks in the medium and, even, in the commentators view, to a final pastel which marks an elder artist's failing imagination. To this layman, that last one looked quite good. Naturally, his seminal pastels made in Venice, are central to the discussion.,
In addition to an introductory essay and commentary for each picture, there is an ample appendix with many contemporary reviews of his exhibitions as well as some humor at his expense from Punch and a guide for/by the lithographer, among the best available, who created the prints based on the pastels.
Happily, copies of the book are still available at other than an immoderate price. To the art-lover, it is worth the price (as of June, 2014).
