3.0 out of 5 stars Nice playing and quite the mix April 7, 2014
Format:Audio CD
This album is, in many ways, a "resume" disc for pianist/composer James Adler. I know of James Adler mostly from some piano recitals and one or two compositions being showcased in Chicago. In both venues, he is a talented individual. This disc features some nice, if not stunning, performances of some classical works like the Liszt "Mephisto Waltz", the most well known. There are also a few quite nice little works by others; the best of which is the "Scherzino" by Leo Ornstein. The "Passacaglia" by Paul Turok is pleasant, but did not leave a strong impression. I felt rather the same way about Turok's "Tango (for James Adler)" It is pleasant enough but a bit simplistic. For me, the most intriguing aspects of this collection are Adler's own works. For example, Adler's own "Passacaglia" is a bit like the Turok offering; nice enough. I was, however, taken by Adler's "Reverie" for tenor sax and piano. This is a sultry little work, played here very nicely by Jordan Smith. I think this is a recital piece that most tenor players would want to at least look at. I liked Adler's "A Song of the Road" for baritone and piano too. The text, by James Whitcomb O'Riley has a feel of lost love or farewell to it and it and has a lovely longing tone; with symbolism that could be taken in a few different ways. This eclectic collection includes a couple of entertaining little oddities, as well. The "Christopher Street Rag" by Seth Bradford is, indeed, just a short, somewhat subdued rag that makes for pleasant, uncomplicated listening. Similarly, Adler's own 'adaptation' of the "Ballad of Sweeney Todd" by Sondheim; a piano 'Fantasy' is a familiar melody to theater fans and Adler has turned it into a nice, impressive showpiece.
