Editorial Reviews

Wine expert Oz Clarke continues his mission to educate and excite Top Gear's petrol head James May about wine and this time, they set off on a an 8-week California road trip to sample the finest and most foul that the New World has to offer. Starting in Los Angeles and traveling in an enormous, luxury Monaco RV, Oz and James explore small artisan vineyards, exclusive upscale wineries and corporate mass producers, merrily sampling their diverse intoxicating beverages and butting heads along the way. As Oz introduces James to his posh vintner friends, James is still determined to discover a decent wine for under $20.

Last August I was introduced to the duo of Oz Clark and James May when BFS Video released the series "Oz & James Big French Wine Adventure" - a 2006 BBC series which not only taught about wine but was entertaining as well. (You can see my review of that DVD on Amazon.). Now the guys have come to the US (California, to be exact) for eight more episodes of traveling and imbibing and - in May's case, discovering - the wine regions from Santa Barbara to Napa.

To quote from my review of the French wine series (and give you some background): " Some of the most interesting TV shows comes from the BBC and this 2006 six-episode miniseries is just one example. I nearly fell off my chair laughing a few times just watching the first 25-minute episode! And you are sure to get at least a few guffaws - along with a lot of chuckles - whether you are a wine novice or are well educated on wines.

In 2006 wine critic, author and actor Oz Clarke decided to take British TV star, car racer, beer lover, and wine ignorant James May (who looks a lot like a young Gerard Depardieu - the French actor) on a month long journey through France to see if he could educate May on wine. They traveled in May's Jaguar XJ6, camped out in tents and got to drink some of the rarest and best French wines. "

Well, now May is a bit more educated in the area of wine and Oz wants to test him so they head to The Golden State. Instead of traveling in a Jaguar and sleeping in a tent, May decided they should travel in a deluxe motor home.

Each episode takes them to a different region and also focuses on such things as "wine with food". They visit and talk with wine makers and - spoiler alert for baby boomers! - one turns out to be the TV star who started the coonskin hat craze in the 1950s!

I laughed (and learned) while watching this series. I think you will too.

These two are really funny and you learn a lot. Even great if you don't love wine. Fans of Top Gear will enjoy watching James be the "Clarkson" of the group.

A highly entertaining adventure where Oz Clarke continues to "teach" James May about wine - how it's made, its flavors, its culture. They cover some of California's great wine country, exploring a variety of wines from "2 buck Chuck" to "Garlic Wine" to a 100 point rated wine. Great scenery as they travel across California during a summer trip.

The European (English) perspective of the American Wine industry in CA. The vineyards visited by, this duo, gives a good overview.

I watched there other films on England And France and quite enjoyed them. I found them very amusing and learned a lot. My in-laws are from England and found the references to many places and comments quite humorous. I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys drinking wine and want to see how it is made and where it come from..

This was a great Tv show/series, I loved watching it over & over.
It is very well done, informative, educational, entertaining, and funny.
My only complaint about the DVD's is that they are just the episodes, nothing more.
I was hoping it would contain extra's like behind the scenes, bloopers, what wine they were drinking, things like that.
It is just the episodes and nothing more.
