5.0 out of 5 stars Quantum of Solace Wii
"The best bond game since Goldeneye" was pretty close. I was eager in anticipation of this title. Quality fps is a genre that leaves much to be desired on the Wii. Heck... QUALITY games are lacking on the Wii, with only a handful of worthy titles in the entire catalog of games. So, I had really high hopes for the game. I will say that, without a doubt, this game is worth buying. Many sites have reviewed this game quite harshly, in my humble opinion. The basic game play is solid, and there are some really good things about this game. Some of the cut-scenes are really cool, the music and voice acting are top-notch, and the online is really well done (I experienced absolutely ZERO lag). That said, I did have a few gripes with this game. First, there are some framerate issues. During some of the more intense action scenes, the game seemed to hang a bit, and that was disappointing. Also, I am not sure how I feel about the quality of the presentation. The cut-scenes are really well done. However, while actual gameplay had some really well done portions (the backgrounds are beautiful in some parts), the character design and detail were pretty weak. Bonds hands (from the FPS perspective) looked like a pair of pig hoofs sloppily holding a gun. Overall, the game looks presentable... but I cant help but wonder if Beenox (the game developer) could have done better. I look at some of the late PlayStation 2 titles (like Metal Gear 2).... and a lot of them look better than most Wii games. This game really looked a lot like CounterStrike 1 or Half-Life 1 (which were GREAT games 5 years ago). It plays a lot like them too. To sum things up:

The Good:
*Controls are really well done, in my opinion. I just wish there was support for the gamecube controller or the classic controller, since not everyone likes using the wiimote+nunchuck. I do like the wiimote+nunchuck, so this worked well.
*The menus are well done and easy to navigate
*The online portion utilizing Nintendo WFC is really stable. I am not sure how many people can play in one game at a time. I have heard as many as 12 and I have heard as low as 4... and I think at one point in one of the games I played as many as 5 or 6 people were in. Playing online, I experienced zero lag, and the online games were really fun, and the levels are large... plenty of places to seek cover and snipe! And yes, Goldeneye fans... there are PROXIMITY MINES! ;)
*Quality voice acting and cut-scenes... not to mention you get to hear the new Bond song before the movie even comes out~!
*You get a free movie ticket to watch the Quantum of Solace movie when you buy the game! (No kidding! ) The ticket is in the instruction manual and can be redeemed between Nov 14 and Dec 18 (or somewhere around then). This was a pleasant surprise for me!
*Local split screen play: I cant wait to try this. I haven't had a chance to yet, but the game play is solid online, so local play will be great. The only problem is that if you want 4 friends to be able to come over and play, you will need 4 wiimotes and 4 nunchucks! =(
*Some aspects of the presentation during gameplay are really cool: Enemies react different when shot in different parts of the body. The 3rd person cover system works really well. Enemy AI was also quite surprising. Enemies will run for cover and will flank you. I noticed that the enemy AI was more impressive when you played the game taking advantage of cover and stealth. If you just charge a group of enemies, they react like dumb bots... but when you try to use cover and stealth, they will do the same. Overall, I was happy and was challenged.

The Bad:
*Every now and then during intense action sequences (like at one point when the building that I was in was on fire and stuff was exploding all over the place as I tried to escape), the frame rate dropped significantly. Overall, the game seems to run smooth, and this issue was definitely the exception, not the norm. But, this was still disappointing!
*Presentation was a bit of a let down. The levels give a nice feeling of being wide open for exploration, but things can get kinda buggy. For instance, some low walls cant be jumped over, while others cant. I hate how bonds hands look when holding a handgun. They look better when holding other weapons, and I guess that this really isnt a big deal... more of a gripe. I just wish that this game looked a bit more polished like Metroid Prime 3 (or the Conduit!!!), but again, the graphics are kinda hard to call! It looks great at times, and not so great at other times. Overall, I would rate the graphical presentation at about a 6 or 7 out of 10 (as far as Wii games go... :[ )
*No alternative control schemes. My friends who don't have a Wii like to use GameCube controllers for most games, so they will be disappointed.

All in all, I am pleased with this game, and got what I wanted...a satisfying fps/action game to keep me busy until The Conduit comes out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quantum of Solace Wii, November 4, 2008

This review is from: James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace (Video Game)
"The best bond game since Goldeneye" was pretty close. Quantum of Solace is a first person/third person hybrid shooter, which has you use an array of weapons, grenades, and takedowns to advance through single player. Whenever you crouch behind a wall or an object, it switches into third person and you can see Bond. Quantum of Solace consists of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace so you get to play through both movies! Let me tell you, the missions are very interesting, fun, and makes you think becuase, after all, Bond's greatest weapon is his mind. The AI is also very intelligent and will do anything to kill you.

The multiplayer is a blast if you have four friends. Otherwise, stick to single player and online. It's great for parties and gatherings, though, and for your Xbox lover friends who only play FPS's.

The real meat of the game comes in the online mode. Using Nintendo WFC, you can connect online and play a free for all or an objective race in teams or alone. It is the best part of the game I'll tell you that.

The controls are really simple and are great to pick up & play. I'd recommend using the Wiimote and Nunchuck and not the Zapper. The control is harder with the Zapper. With B to shoot and A to crouch, you'll be on your way to 007 in no time!

Overall, Quantum of Solace is, in my opinion, the second best Bond game since Goldeneye. The first being Nightfire. I loved that game. Overall, I'd give it a 8.5/10. Buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars ONLINE Multiplayer Makes the Game!, November 16, 2008

For me, the Single player mode is a waste of time, I've played about an hour of single player mode, maybe 4 levels in...

The Online multiplayer is awesome! I've played about 25 hours online since I got the game last week. Its that addicting and well made. Its clear to me that they spent more time developing the multiplayer than the single player mode, and that was the RIGHT move! I've never had to wait more than a minute to get a match, you don't need friend codes to play. You can choose "play anyone" and pick right up with 3 other online players. Yes, its only 4 players in a match, there were rumors that it was going to be 12, but I've played non-stop, and never been in a match with more than 4 people. But, 4 people seems to be perfect, not too much, and not too little. You can play teams as well, 2 on 2 or 3 vs. 1, you can switch teams at any point in the match, which depending on how you feel, is a good or bad thing. Online matches last 15 minutes, the levels are very cool and they also put in the Facility from Goldeneye, with an updated and expanded look.

I just got CoD: WaW the other day, and while its amazing, I honestly think QoS online is a slightly bit better. I say this because I love the "A" button duck and cover move with QoS, its a great tactic to use while playing others in multiplayer. And QoS uses the same engine as CoD, so switching classes in a match, etc all are in QoS.

Its no Goldeneye of course, I don't think anything will ever compare to it. But I think its as good as Nightfire and TWINE in the multiplayer department and takes the cake for #2 all-time Bond game, just because of the multiplayer! Get this game for the Wii!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun and awesome gameplay, January 7, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace (Video Game)
Eventhough the graphics are not super amazing, this is truly the best Bond game since Golden Eye. I love the new features it has, the fighthing sequences and the over all game experience it brings to Wii owners. This is not just the Quantum game, a large part of the game includes Casino Royal stages too. The only thing I don't like is the fact that the game froze-down during some video playbacks a couple of times. I do recommend it for everybody.

This is a fun game. Watch out though there is a bug inherent in some of the games where it freezes. I oprdered another one with no issues, and it works great. A lot of fun to play.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun, yet flawed, April 25, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace (Video Game)
About two weeks ago, I watched Quantum of Solace for the first time. I loved the movie and thought it was a worthy follow-up to Casino Royale. I hadn't played a new Bond game since Everything or Nothing, but this movie really got me in the mood. The next day, I headed down to the store and picked up a fresh copy for the Wii and was anxious to settle in for some great 007 action.

So, I get home, boot up the game, and with Wii Zapper at the ready, I make my way through the first level of the single player game (on the 3rd easiest of four difficulty settings). My first thought: What's up with the blurry textures on everything, not to mention the lack of polygons on the objects? Next thought: why do my bullets not leave holes in the walls or break glasses, vases, etc. that are lying around? Once I get past those annoyances, I start tweaking the controls, as the default setting is just not fast enough for my tastes. Unfortunately, this is no Metroid Prime 3, and I found myself adjusting bounding boxes and such through most of the game in my efforts to adjust the controls to my liking. They're really not bad, but after the perfection of Metroid's advanced setting with no extra setup, I would've appreciated a similar experience here. Regardless, the controls are fairly solid, just not perfect.

Anyway, I continued through that first level becoming befuddled by the paradoxical graphics; there are some structures in this game that look absolutely stunning and actually do have some destructible parts, but then you get inside them and see some awful looking accessories that fill the buildings. And, don't get me started on the fire effects, which kind of remind me of N64 or PS1 fire, not Wii or Gamecube. Finally, at the end of the level I encounter a glitch that prevents me from moving, thereby causing my character to die and making me restart from that point. I've tested this glitch on subsequent play-throughs of that level, and it's always the same. It always has the glitch on the first try, and then everything's fine after that. The good news is that I haven't seen any similar glitches in the entire game. Still, as you might imagine I'm somewhat disappointed after finishing this stage of the game.

Don't be disheartened, as I found that it just took me longer to really get into Quantum of Solace than with other games I've played. The overall experience is astonishingly satisfying, considering those early issues I had. There's a sophisticated life system, where you can hide and recovery energy, plus the cover system is great. It's similar to the one in Everything or Nothing, for those of you who've had the chance to play that game. There are also nice 3rd person action sequences that are transitioned to pretty well from the 1st person parts. The game even employs optional stealth elements, which are fun to attempt. This also a pretty challenging game, and I intend to try the higher difficulties at some point.

I've spent a little time in the online mode, and it's about what you would probably expect from a Nintendo WiFi game. It's got rankings, a couple different modes (team-based and free for all), and it can be pretty addictive. Just don't expect a lot of extra features. I should note that there is a mission-based "rush" mode that seems pretty unique. The players are all competing to complete objectives quickest, and it can be pretty intense.

Honestly, the biggest problem with Quantum of Solace is that it lacks polish. The Wii can handle better graphics, and there is some disappointing slowdown during some of the large explosions, which I think could have probably been fixed. This seems to be a case of a Publisher/Developer hurrying to get a game out in time for the movie, rather than perfecting the game at the risk of fans of the movie losing interest. People need to take a cue from what Rare did with Goldeneye. That game wasn't released at the time of the movie, and it was one of the N64's best games and a hit. Then again, I think EA had it right when they abandoned the Bond movie-based games, and started developing entirely original games with their own storylines. Unfortunately, I suppose that would be harder to do with this reestablished Bond franchise.

If you're looking for the next great 1st person shooter of this generation, I'd wait for The Conduit. I personally envision that game as this generation's Goldeneye. Otherwise, if you just want a new Bond game and are willing to overlook the flaws that come from a game being rushed to market, there is fun to be had here. Just keep your expectations in check.

This is one of the best Wii games ever. There is a lot of strategy involved and the action is quite realistic. There is not much graphic violence (e.g., no scenes of bloody injuries) which broadens the range of ages the game can be used for. Overall, I would say it is A LOT of fun, especially if you like James Bond stuff.

This game has been getting a lot of use in our household, but this is mostly in the 4-player local mode. It's a lot of fun to be playing with your friends/family right in the room. We haven't tried the internet connection.
The game itself is fine, once you get used to the maneuvering with the wii controller.

I like the playing games such as Modern Warfare on a PS3, but didn't think MW adapted well to the Wii. Quantum of Solace game controls and Wii work great together! If you have a Wii, and like first-person shooter games and love the Bond films....this is for you. Even though the game is titled "Quantum of Solace" there's a part in the story line that takes you back to play some famous scenes from Casino Royale...it was great fun!
