About the Author

Paul Duncan has edited 50 film books for TASCHEN, including the award-winning The Ingmar Bergman Archives, and authored Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick in the Film Series.

More About the Author

I was born at a very young age and have grown older ever since. I have passed the time sharing my passions for films, mystery fiction and comics by publishing, editing and writing books and magazines. I spent my teenage years publishing 'Ark: The Comics Magazine' (1980-1990) and writing graphic novels ('Second City', 'Overload', 'Beautiful People'), before graduating to a life of crime.
I co-founded 'Crime Time' magazine (1995-present), and edited 'The Third Degree: Crime Writers In Conversation', as well as writing some mystery short stories. It was during this time that I discovered the fantastic fiction of Gerald Kersh, who I have championed ever since through many articles and short story collections. (He's famous for the novel 'Night and the City', which was turned into a fantastic Film Noir by Jules Dassin in 1950.) One day, I'll even finish Kersh's biography. Promise.
Unemployed and in need of an income, I founded Pocket Essentials in 1999, edited around 50 titles in the series, and wrote eight of them, including 'Martin Scorsese', 'Alfred Hitchcock', 'Film Noir' and 'Noir Fiction'. This brought me to the attention of the illustrious Mr. Benedikt Taschen, who took me under his wing and told me to make film books. Since 2003, I have happily, if not ecstatically, carried out his wishes by editing over 50 film books for TASCHEN, big and small, including the award-winning 'The Ingmar Bergman Archives'. I've even written a couple of them. Yesterday, somebody told me I had the best job in the world, and for the life of me I cannot find anything wrong with that statement.

this book is simply incredible - it is the most elaborate , and visually stunning book about the James Bond movies that I have ever seen - and this includes the 1967 Casino Royale, the 1983 Never Say Never Again and the new Skyfall - catch it while you can because it is destined to become an instant classic and valuable collectible -

You must truly see this book to appreciate it. It is massive. It is an exceptionally quality publication and profusely illustrated with an over abundance of commentary of many of the Bond crew throughout the series. It is incredible. Some of the photos, the comments and the graphics are so endearing, especially for the earlier Bond films. This is the one book that BOND fans who have been with the series for many years (at least like I have, and there are many of you) MUST have.

I really like the coverage of ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. I was once told by author John Griswold (Ian Fleming's James Bond: Annotations and Chronologies for Ian Fleming's Bond Stories) that Cubby Broccoli had been so disillusioned with many of the Bond fans who had been petitioning to get George Lazenby back, that he instructed Pinewood to empty the vaults of all non-essential documents and media pertaining to ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. It remains one of the most talked about Bonds of the series.

You get the sense that the author definitely sees Sean Connery and Roger Moore as the two actors who defined the James Bond series and this is somewhat a homage to their efforts. Don't let this book get by you. It truly is a required Bond book.

This book is amazing! It arrived in a rather plain cardboard "suitcase-style" slipcase with a plastic handle, but WOW the book itself is beautiful! I actually weighed it as soon as it came out of the shipping box because it was so heavy. It is huge - 12" x 16.5" x 2"!

There is no paper jacket, but because of the size and heft of this tome, it would probably be difficult to keep one on undamaged. The book's cover lookes like red pebble-grained snakeskin or lizard and the inside front and back cover pages are copies of a shooting schedule from "From Russia With Love". The pages are high-quality glossy paper and there seems to be something on just about every page, that's why I count 600 as opposed to the 592 stated. One page has a little plastic pocket containing a filmstrip of 12 original frames from a Dr. No. original 35mm print.

I am glad to see that all of the movies from Dr. No to Skyfall are included as well as Never Say Never Again. Other reviewers have complained that much of the book is taken from DVD special features. Well, I like having a choice to either watch the features or read them. Many photos are included that have not been released elsewhere.

I haven't looked much beyond the first few pages because this is the kind of book I love to consume a small serving at a time - to savor like a fine Port. For anyone who is a Bondophille, your Bond collection is not complete without The James Bond Archives.

...that is, this book about him is. What an incredible treasury of everything about Bond,
James Bond. Never-before-seen photos, movie posters, storyboard illustrations and
more than a few surprises (like the 'Woody Allen' version of Casino Royale) are
included in this magnificent tome. This is not just another casual bedtime read, though-
make sure you own a HEAVY OAK TABLE to support the book before you buy.
I wish there was a way to give this behemoth a TEN STAR RATING...because I would.
DON'T SPEND THE REST OF YOUR LIFE IN BITTER REGRET, Bond fans- plunk down
a few shillings for your ticket to enter the JAMES BOND ARCHIVES today!

A fair percentage of the text is derived from filmed interviews available on the new Blu-raysBond 50: The Complete 22 Film Collection [Blu-ray], and I've been reading the text and then viewing the movie. The still photos are excellent and the insights into the screenplays, often with multiple authors and many drafts, are fascinating. Throughout the book one gets a very good sense of the struggle to maintain the very high standard set by the first three movies, as budgets rose along with profits. The sheer size and weight of the book, often commented on, makes it somewhat difficult and tiring to read, particularly for those us who are, shall we say, mature. The book was a gift from my son, so I am merely storing it for him, but I can still venture that to any Bond fan, it is certainly worth the money for its heirloom quality in both binding and content. Those who enjoyed the Kubrick Archives, will find this a very good bookcase or bookstand mate.

I totally agree with Mr. Goldberg's review: This is a wonderful, beautiful book let down by the fact that 90% of the text content is regurgitated from the DVD Making Of's and audio commentaries and other previously published sources. 9 contributor/authors and you couldn't get new quotes? But I still recommend it for all Bond fans.
